Hey everyone, i just bought this lovely insect a few days ago and i thought i would share it. Its called a Uropygi or a Vinegaroon. She is classified as a other arachnid even though she has pinchers which makes her somewhat resemble a scorpion. This girl isn't venomous in any way but has a pretty cool why of defending herself. she can spray a acid out of there abdomen. I haven't had the pleasure of seeing her do this yet, but i suppose thats a good thing. Here is some photos of her.

Thanks for looking :)

Very nice! Apologies for correcting you but you should know that your beauty there is actually an arachnid, not an insect ;) . Thus it is related to spiders, scorpions and mites, etc, not crickets and flies.

HAHA i cant believe i wrote that... you would think i would know better after putting this post in the tarantulas and other arachnids category. lol :p

Say she's running up your face or running into a room u don't want to her to go, how do u re-direct her quickly without her spraying?

I just got over my fears of this bug a few weeks ago :) whent to the insectarium in PA and held one (they have no mantises :( )

you would be surprised how much i can actually manipulate this bug with out it even getting upset. i can redirect it with no problem. it really isnt that aggressive. i havent even made it go into a defense pose yet and i have held it multiple times.

they are an amazing arachnid. like by far one of my favorites. they are so active and are always on the go! i was a little intimidated by it at first but they are really just a wimp haha. i would recommend on to anybody. unless you come across an aggressive one i imagine that acid isnt very fun when you get.it on your face :p

The spray is harmless, it contains a small amount of acid, mostly acetic like vinegar. That is why they are also known as vinegaroons. It would hurt as much as vinegar. The flagellum (tail) is used to direct the spray so it hits the threat. It does not use it to feel its way around, that is what the antenniform front legs are for.
