What is the maximum distance mantids can spot and stalk prey. My mantis cage is about 30cm tall and they (heirodula sp) seem able to spot & stalk prey over that distance if they have not been fed for a couple of days or so. I have not tested over greater distances but it would be interesting to test a starving mantis to see how good its vision really was.

Another question. Do you think mantids see in colour or B & W. Not sure how it could be tested.

they got compound eyes ! so the quicker that the thing in front of it moves . the more clearly they can see it as it triggers each compound in turn which each one sends a signal to its brain . so if a cricket ran past it would trigger quite a few fairly quickly meaning it would know what it is as there a clearer image ! as for coulour .. compound eyes see in coulour like ours ! however .. simple eyes that are inbertween there antenne are only for light and dark . and adjust the compounds varinginly !
