Last fall I got four wonderful Eastern Lubber grasshoppers. I definitely want to get those fellas again, but I also want to get into other species of grasshoppers not found in Pennsylvania.

Any large grasshoppers (greater than 2 inches long) would do. The larger the better, but there are a few exceptions: Painted grasshoppers, which look really cool... any Lubber type grasshopper, especially Horse and Plains lubbers.

No crickets, except for Jerusalem crickets might be interesting.

No katydids, except for the carnivorous satanspawn from Texas (because they look awesome but I forget the name of the species - but they look like katydids from heck!)

I believe double dz can help you out with this... try giving them a shout. as for the hoppers, try chameleonforums, lots of people down florida catch hoppers and they'll sell you some for the right price since they have to catch em!

I can collect you some bird grasshoppers at some point this summer if you're still looking.

American Bird?

That'll be cool! How big do they get?

What is double dz?
I believe that is what they are. Not sure. They are very big though. At least a few inches long.

i just found a huge black grasshopper. and it looks like a horse lubber one.. but i live in georgia so i have no idea how they got here. hahah. i probably replied too late. but if youre still interested, you can email me! [email protected] :D bc i have no idea what to do with it. it looks so cool though.

Bird grasshoppers are the way to go (for me at least). They can fly and make a nice meal for birds and large mantids since they are large and non-toxic. I have a female pinned up with wings spread and it measured 2 inches from tip of head to the end of the abdomen.

That's an Eastern Lubber. Their next molt will usually have them turn a bright orange or yellow color with black markings and pink and black wings. Very gorgeous and fun to keep as pets. I have 8 of them, 5 of which are adults.

That reminds me, Joe. I've been seeing a large number of grasshopper species lately when I'm out in the cow fields, one of which rivals in size to the lubber. Next time I'm out I will try and get a picture.
