Was This A Successful Mating Attempt?

Here's the story.

Gor-Tok (the female) grabbed onto Morta (the male) and practically twisted his head off. With much difficulty, I got her to release him, but by that point his neck was no longer working. He couldn't turn his head. It also seemed that she'd damaged his other eye, as well, AND she had broken his back leg so it was bent in half and bleeding. And while I managed to get her to let go of HIM, he refused to let go of her. He seemed more motivated than ever into mating with her. I wonder if instinctually he knew he wouldn't have much time after the damage she'd just done (so was motivated into passing on his seed before he died to keep his genes going).

Eventually, he ended up sticking his reproductive organs into hers. He deliberately pulled out, after about 20 seconds, and I'm wondering if that's enough time? Should she now be ready to lay an ootheca?

I put him back in his container after the deed and he was doing terribly unfortunately. He was very weak and disoriented; his claws weren't moving well, he'd lost the use of his back leg, and his neck was literally torn to the point that he couldn't keep his head up or move it at all. I checked on him later and he was at the bottom of the container, upside down. I'm extremely sad that he ended up dying, I was really hoping I'd be able to save him. But that's the consequence of trying to mate cannibalistic creatures; her killing him is quite natural, even if it upsets me. I really loved Morta, he was such a beauty.

But what's done is done, and I BELIEVE Gor-Tok should now be laying an ootheca... here's a video I took of the process, about ten seconds after he stuck it in (the quality and view-point isn't the greatest but it's what I could manage to do in that quick amount of time, plus I didn't want to disturb them by moving the container in the other direction so I was forced to take footage of it through the clear plastic):

Does this look as if it was a success?

Doesn't look good.

Did he fall off her on his own or did you remove him?

I always leave damaged males on the female as they can continue to mate all day or longer, and can stay alive for days if not completely eaten.

Seem too quick, but as you may know the males have a mating response after being decapitated (which might have already been triggered by his neck injury). Like this http://mantidforum.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=27290&hl=headless

If your male is still half alive it might be worth a shot to cut his head off and place him on her back. I know it's gruesome, but it may be his only chance to reproduce.

That isn't nearly enough time. In the future if such a thing happens try to hold the male in place until he connects. Often if the decapitated male connects he will fully mate. But this is difficult to do. It always works better if the male is injured after he is already mating but getting an injured male to mate after the injury happens is possible.

I was afraid of that.

And he didn't fall off her, I meant he removed his reproductive organs from hers but was still grabbing on. But afterward, when she kept walking, he wasn't able to hold on. He was in pretty bad shape.

I kept trying to have him mate with her but he was, like I said, in bad shape. He could hardly hold on.

I thought it might have been too quick. That sucks. Well the male is dead actually, I think the damage to his neck was pretty bad (it was hardly connected to his head, his head was just hanging there and he couldn't even move it). So he may have died for nothing, which is a real shame. Would 10 seconds make a difference? He connected with her better than he did in the video before I actually started filming.

Would around 10 seconds make a difference? He connected with her better than he did in the video before I was able to start filming. I did try holding him in place a few times because he was in really rough shape. He had trouble holding on, I think she'd damaged his arms as well as his neck.

If you can position him to connect properly, it won't be necessary for him to hold on with his arms and legs. If he was successful the first time, you may see signs of a spermatophore. A short connection time sounds like he did not connect successfully and was attempting to correct by re-engaging.

The general consensus is thirty minutes.

Every time I see this thread come up, I ask myself, "Isn't any "attempt" successful? I have successfully attempted many things. I think I might successfully attempt to win the lottery this week, but it doesn't mean I'll win. :clover:
