Here's the story.
Gor-Tok (the female) grabbed onto Morta (the male) and practically twisted his head off. With much difficulty, I got her to release him, but by that point his neck was no longer working. He couldn't turn his head. It also seemed that she'd damaged his other eye, as well, AND she had broken his back leg so it was bent in half and bleeding. And while I managed to get her to let go of HIM, he refused to let go of her. He seemed more motivated than ever into mating with her. I wonder if instinctually he knew he wouldn't have much time after the damage she'd just done (so was motivated into passing on his seed before he died to keep his genes going).
Eventually, he ended up sticking his reproductive organs into hers. He deliberately pulled out, after about 20 seconds, and I'm wondering if that's enough time? Should she now be ready to lay an ootheca?
I put him back in his container after the deed and he was doing terribly unfortunately. He was very weak and disoriented; his claws weren't moving well, he'd lost the use of his back leg, and his neck was literally torn to the point that he couldn't keep his head up or move it at all. I checked on him later and he was at the bottom of the container, upside down. I'm extremely sad that he ended up dying, I was really hoping I'd be able to save him. But that's the consequence of trying to mate cannibalistic creatures; her killing him is quite natural, even if it upsets me. I really loved Morta, he was such a beauty.
But what's done is done, and I BELIEVE Gor-Tok should now be laying an ootheca... here's a video I took of the process, about ten seconds after he stuck it in (the quality and view-point isn't the greatest but it's what I could manage to do in that quick amount of time, plus I didn't want to disturb them by moving the container in the other direction so I was forced to take footage of it through the clear plastic):
Does this look as if it was a success?
