Hi guys!  We lost one of our Chinese mantids last night. I'm not even sure what happened. He was hanging from the top but only by one leg. Maybe a molt gone bad???

He was not one of our pet mantids. But it upset me, nonetheless.

We raised 247 Chinese from the time they hatched until present. They should be adults within the next month. Out of all of them, we only lost 2 until last night. And we lost both of them as an L2 and a bad molt. I had hoped we were out of the bad molt stage.  :(

We received a ghost ooth on April 10th. I spoke with the seller about another issue and he told me at that time that my ooth was "fresh". It has yet to hatch. Should I give up? Or wait?

Please consider giving the ooth more time. In my experience, if it's not moldy and still looks viable, there's nothing to lose. :)

Sorry about the bad news.

:)  I am sorry about your dead mantids... I would DEFINITELY give the ooth a few more weeks. It can take a while for them to hatch! Good luck with the remaining Chinese! That is a lot of mantids!

We sold a lot of the Chinese to various schools. And we released 70 into our garden and woods.  :)   We are down to just under 2 dozen and I am hoping we can breed them.  Though I am terrified of not being able to protect the male!

@mantidmomma

;)  You will certainly not have a pest problem with that many mantids out there! Those are some lucky schools that got mantids too! I hope that you can successfully raise all of them to adult! What instar are they?

Sorry for your loss. It could’ve been a bad molt or it could’ve anything, really. Sounds like you did a fantastic job keeping all the other Chinese mantises alive, though. It’s really nice that you sold some to schools. Good luck with the breeding!

As for your ooth, I would agree with everyone above, and give it more time.
