I am not sure???.. but looks wise.. I think it has something to do with the wings???

thanks for the help, but the angle the wings are at determine whether or not they look black or purple! mine had purple wings but if you looked at them from a certain angle they appeared to be black

Mine are still young so I have no clue xD
Lol

I read somewhere that affinis are larger, like up to five inches, while agrionina are closer to 3. I also read that affinis are lighter than agrionina. Does anyone know if either of these statements are true?

Hmm doesn't sound promising on the wings, or any other method it seems. I have a Budwing and the seller didn't know which of the species it was either - I guess when it molts to a adult I might be able to find out.

Its very difficult to determine which species! How does one even know theyve bred agrionina or affinis? we can be told we have affinis and it may actually be agrionina. How will we ever know? we need to get to the bottom of this lol. I wonder if the ooths are different in appearance? Ill see if i can find info on that.

Good luck!

hmm... Found photos of the oothecae. This is apparently an affinis ootheca: http://www.phasmidsincyberspace.com/Pictures/Budwing%20mantisOotheca.JPG

And this is an ootheca from one of my female Budwings: http://th09.deviantart.net/fs70/200H/f/2014/043/e/e/vegrandis__first_ootheca_by_alexandersmantids-d75yu6c.jpg

They do appear to be different, no?
Appears to be different, but one looks like a unfinished ooth so it's hard to say.

Your right. As there are two species though someone knows how to tell them apart. Perhaps a dead one after mating sent to a Entomologist can then finally be labeled correctly. ;)

Which ones appears to be unfinished would you say, mine or the other?

Lol that is true, hopefully the entomologist would state what the differences are, for us mantid owners.
