i believe mels are a little bit smaller than hydei but usually nymphs start off with mels or hydei then work their way up to house flies and anything the size of or smaller than the mantis, sometimes mantises are able to eat things that are even bigger than themselves!

I didn't answer because I have no idea. I'd say give it a try and if they're not supposed to eat it, they'll drop it! I'd supervise too just in case the slug could hurt the mantis in some way.

Doubt it, just like I've never seen one eat pill bugs or sow bugs. They attack and then drop.

No. The slime would foul up their front legs. Mantids eat other insects.
