Yes, it is possible that one nymph is a molt ahead. It may be the more aggressive eater. I have had several nymphs from the same ooth grow at different rates. These were semi-communal species and reared in the same tank, so no environmental caused differences. They just grow at different rates.

I have no experience with your species. However, I have 2 wide arms that each went through 3 molts during the month of Dec! So that is 1 molt every 10 days. While going from L1 to L3 in 12 days seems a bit fast, but possible with plenty of food and heat.

The second pic you have there is a mantis that just shed momentarily so it might appear to be larger and lighter in color. Mantis "expand" considerably coming out from the moult and will remain "large" for short period of time, but will later go back to its own size. So that could be a second instar still, unless this is a super fast one, or just a larger than usual L2 specimen.

MJ, you will find assorted colors of nymphs in a group of P. ocellata, eventhough you keep them in the same temperature and humidity, something i notice with my group which is interesting. Whereas P. wahlbergii prefer to remain more or less similar colors when keep in the same conditions. So you are not getting a "different" kind :) .
