I guess it's safe to assume it's a girl. I didn't know they would lay eggs without having been mated but I found some in the cup today when I cleaned it. Wish they would hatch! I'll incubate even though I doubt they will hatch.

Really cool looking eggs. Like from the movie Alien.

Nice, I hope you get a hatch too. Just the thought of a bunch of dangerous little anteater-alien-nymphs running around gives me pause (I'll pass on owning anything that has a bite like that), a hatch would be an epic photo opportunity.

Great pics! Is this the one you rasied from a nymph? She laid them quite sporadically. They usually lay them all in one big clump!

Yeah, this is the L1 I found this past spring. The way the bark was in the cup I don't think she had enough open space to lay them all in one clump. There were some twigs crossing its surface.

I want a wheel bug so bad!Where can I get one?
I don't know. I found this one as a nymph this past spring in the local woods. It was hunting other bugs in the bramble along a creek. I'll be looking for some again this spring. Hopefully I'll find a mate for her.

congrats on taking great care of such a crazy bug. love the photos too.

btw, I miss all of your videos and beg you "please make some more bro".

I'm pretty sure adults overwinter, so if u diapause it she should live to spring

My Zelus adults weren't overwintered and they were dead by February
Ismart has had an adult male alive for at least 2 years so these may be more long lived than Zelus.

Thanks, man. I hear ya. It's a matter of having the time to produce everything I'd like to. I'm gearing up to license photos and/or at least get a gallery site up. So many photos to sort through and tweak. Plus I have a video project I'm getting paid for that takes priority. I'm not allowing myself to do bug videos until it's done.

But on the bright side I was contacted by a very prestigious science academy to get permission to use some of my footage as part of a mantis exhibit! Very exciting. More on that later...

I may have some wheel bug nymphs to offer in the spring, if all goes well.

I had a wild-caught adult female lay eggs for me. She lasted quite a long time after that, too. (In contrast to what I read online, which was that they would pass as soon as they laid eggs.) I was kind of hoping she'd lay another "cache" of eggs before passing, though. Since she was caught as an adult, fairly late in the season, I'm going to venture to guess that her eggs were fertile. Now, if I just have some crazy luck hatching them out, that would be great! (And, safe to say, you'll see a new page added to the website!)

Henry, I may be back, asking to borrow your pics here soon, since I didn't have any luck getting good pics of my girl before she died. :(

Nice! I hope they hatch! The L1s are red and glossy black like Orchid nymphs.

I'm going to try to get some good pics just in case she dies. She's eating a lot so I think she'll be a rouind a while.
