For us all who sell or trade ooths, whether it is for a passionate hobby which trading or selling helps us further our hobby's life, or if you sell to make profit as some of you guys do... I feel we ALL should start weighing the ooths we offer up for trade/sell and come up with a calculation of ideal weights.

I am not positive what to expect on this topic, but I hope some have done this before.

I realize size doesn't always have to do with count of larvae, but regardless of knowing this, do you guys feel there should be a price tag depending on weight as appose to size?

What species hatch more nymphs by size?

I've had a violin ooth container more nymphs than a huge one. I know this because one tiny one hatched out 23 nymphs. The large one that only hatched out 14 was then cut open. Only 3 were in it. The smaller one was also cut open, had 2 in it. Smaller violin ooth contained 25 and bigger one contained 17. 8 count is a big difference on a species that generally doesn't hatch any more than 30 nymphs for their first couple ooths!

Do you guys think we could start this out as a new trend? Like a requirement or just a simple way of marking a value tag? We all value ooths at different prices, well mostly. lol

Maybe this will be a good thing? Yes it is an extra thing to do, but offering a small ooth that weighs a ton VS. a large ooth that weighs "a none" could be prevented if the ooths are held on hold for weight comparison?

Once an ooth is laid, keep it for 2 whole weeks before offering it. It should weigh more if the larvae are growing.

Any species that hatches within 2-3 weeks obviously isn't a good idea to sell/trade with unless you are in the same country and can get it over night'd or receive it within a few days.

I have a friend in Tanzania who weighs his hetero. and idolo ooths. Especially his idolo ooths, so he says. I am waiting to see if his word makes sense...

Anyways, I'd love to view this thread in a couple days as I will be MIA due to personal reasons. All the best folks, peace.

good idea brian. It will work but you can also weight it when it is layed then if you sell it sooner get the buyer to weight it in a few weeks. It would save alot of... well my ooth didnt hatch problems.

I think that you may be under a misconception here, Brian. A human foetus is fed by the nutrients in its mother's blood stream, and those nutrients are derived from food from outside her body, so that the mother's size and weight increase as the baby grows. Most eggs, though, like insects' and birds' eggs are closed systems. The egg contains enough nutrients for the insect or bird to hatch without reference to the outside. A new-laid chicken's egg doesn't weigh less than one that is about to hatch because the mass has not increased, the cells have merely become rearranged.

An interesting thought though. Perhaps you and JRH3 and a few interested members could run a pilot study to see if I am wrong. Do be sure, though, to control the humidity, since moisture in the ooth could make a relatively large difference in weight.

This should be of particular interest to anyone who has an accurate gram scale, for whatever reason. :D

Thank you Phil, I've had a few people ask me about if I weigh my ooths when laid then again when about to hatch, as they want to know if the ones they bought from are mutual friend who will remain nameless are any good, and I'm like WHAT?(you crazy mixed up kid), I mean they may gain some small amount from being misted but I don't think its substantial.

I can see it now. Injecting ooths with god knows what to increase the weight. Or like stated above giving it a good soaking. I'll tell you that I will not be going out and buying a scale just for this purpose. I'll leave any weighing up to the professionals.

LOL this was meant to be a simple thread asking if anybody's done this or at least given it thought.

I have a guy out in Africa who does this so I figured I would ask around on here!

Thanks Phil for your civility.

I have a gram scale for my baby chameleons and very potent chemicals I use to make artificial diets for caterpillar species! Not what you guys think! LOLLOLOLOL

no hope in dope people!

thanks again Phil, I will glady share any info. I can get to gather.

My best bet is to do this with ootheca that do not require much misting.
