I'm on the verge of throwing out this species! I've never seen a species so idiotic in its behavior! My Gongylus gongylodes, once they turn adult, are running around the enclosure like some kind of demented old man with a spear in his back, thusly breaking their tarsae, their legs, getting their spikes entangled in the netting and breaking or bitting their arms off...

Why are they so freekishly dumb, please explain it to me!

The only time i see any mantis run around all crazy is when they are usally scared of something. Are there to many of them in one enclosure? Perhaps there are to many feeder insectes freaking them out? I would deffienetly change there housing if they are getting all caught up in the netting. As for bitting there own limbs off, that would normally be due to a dieasesed limb, but i guess if they cant get themselves free from the netting what choice do they have but to chew a limb off to get free. They are such a awsome looking species. It's a shame they are giving you such a problem :( .

I hope you figure out the problem. Good luck!

I don't know... I guess I'm gon have to make some different kind of netting, I don't know what exactly - maybe plastic net from the garden store, I have to figure that out.

They get mad when there are pairs in one enclosure... but even when there is plenty of space, they still act mad...

I have had three mantids of different species do something close to what your talking about. They keep trying to find a way out of their enclosures. I wasn't sure what was going on. What I did was lower the temp, not by much, then they calmed down. Give it a try, it may help.

I did the same with Empusa by removing the heating cable... I'm gon do it tomorrow - lets see how it will work out.

But they weren't acting like it before, ust as of late - since I introduced males into the enclosure... weird.

Pelle has a vid in his Gongy post in the photo section, look it up - something similar is going on with my mantids, but mine are a bunch of lazy sods and won't mate yet.

Can't say I've seen a "smart" species.

Since it only seems to to happen when the males are introduced, I wonder if they are just not ready and are trying to get away from the females or if the females aren't ready and acting contrary. It might be interesting to connect the enclosure to a similar one with a sleeve and see if the males migrate into one and leave the females in the other.

I look forward to hearing how this problem works itself out.

Decreased the temperatures to 26C, with one 30C spot - they chose to remain where it's colder and darker - allready they are a lot more calm, just hang out and eat flies.

Hehehehe, yeah - the incestial tornado of mantids inside my room has turned ugly :p

Yeah - their tarsae are really fragile, very prone to physical damage... the whole mantis is a bit like that to be honest.

I have a knack for boners :p

They really calmed down, now I turn off the heating cables after only like 7-8 hours, because after that period they start to get mad, and I don't want that.

One male almost mounted a female, but did it the 69 position, and I don't know if there can be a successful mating through that orface... I'd wager the female would just eat his little "dongle".

Now who would expect a post like that from someone that has the 'superfreak' for his avitar... :)

Maybe that's all that's wrong with mine, the heat, but it's cooled and they still die at the rate of one a day since about a week after they reached adulthood.

Let us know, superfreak, if they start kidnapping other females and keeping them captive and burning them with cigarettes and force sex on them :)
