Hi,

My females of Wide arms are over two weeks after copulation and they are not laying any ooths. They are totally full with food (grasshoopers, fly's etc). Any idea what is going on?

have a look:

Well, my guess is that it's not ready. If it's healthy, then it will lay an ooth sooner or later.

Another thing might be that it can't find a suitable surface to lay an ooth. I don't raise mantis in these deli cups. In my enclosures, where there are a ton of different surfaces and materials to choose from, they (different type of mantis, but might provide similar insight) choose the most unlikely spots and are very picky as to where to lay the ooth.

Try to under feed it for a week, if it feels its going to run low on food sometimes they lay an "emergency" ooth thinking there not going to get more food. Humidity may also be another factor.

yeah use branches or other materials to get the mantis to lay a ooth or move it to a different container with plenty of things it can lay ooths and climb up and down on!

From your pic, she does appear to be "eggbound". How old is she as an adult? If only two weeks then she is not ready to lay yet. These girls take about a month after adulthood to start to deposit ooths. Mated or not. Also you might want to re mate them if possible just to be sure? Good luck! :) One of my females just molted to adulthood a few days ago. Now i just have to wait for my slow growing males.

or do what one other in this forum does for eggbound females and starve them a while maybe a week or so and see if that will induce the mantis to lay!

Thanks for the reply's

Problem solved - I turned up with the temperature. Both females laid huge ooths :) in the same day. Both are over month after molt, they were mated 1.5 week after final molt.

Please keep your fingers crossed about these ooths. Next ooths will be available to sell ;)
