Wikipedia has a mantis article (of mine) in the "Did you know?" section on the main page today (19 Aug 2008). It's about Orthodera novaezealandiae -- a species previously pretty-much only known to us and our friends in NZ itself.

 type all that in, ha ha, I have had strep throat from me little stinkin grandson all week, can hardly swallow, can't see, eyes stingin so bad, now I got the headache that comes with it and all the time nose is runnin and stopped up at same time and am getting really weak. so to type all this in and that too,! hah , not gonna happen, thanks for the link, when I get up off the floor I will go read it :p

I just got up off the floor (from being weak) and read the wi post, my new zealand don't get over an inch. Your post said they get between 3 1/2 and 4". what is the name of my species then and what is the name of this bigger species and how can I get some?

Same species. Maybe it is supposed to say 3.5 - 4 cm? I'll check and try to figure it out. Get well soon.

The info I used from the University of Michigan definately says inches but that may be wrong. Does everyone concur that the NZ's only grow about 1" long? A helpful clue is figuring out how long Orthodera ministralis grows as they're more-or-less conspecific.

I have changed the text and dropped in a note discussing U Michigan's inflated estimate. I think someone in Michigan was just forgetting NZ is metric and changed centemeters to inches. At any rate, the smaller size is part of the main text and the incorrect, larger size is only discussed in a footnote. Thanks for noticing the problem.
