Hey Khori,
You saw Ogiga's paper cone for protecting the male from the female while mating, right?
In the same vein, maybe you could make something to protect your female from the males.... Little mittens (lol!!) or some kind of soft, easily removable tape to cover the sharp claws at the ends of the male's raptorial forearms; or a protective little apron for her?
Yes, I'm halfway kidding..... but only half way. It's food for thought.
Maybe you could rig something that wouldn't hurt them or interfere with mating, that would also protect her. I really don't know what else to suggest. There doesn't seem like much you can do for this type of situation. But maybe someone else will have some less goofy suggestions!
OK... I just thought of something, and it might be just as wacky or ill advised. Maybe other members can comment on the pro's and con's of this idea....
I've used "New Skin" liquid bandage (made to paint on small human skin wounds to seal and protect... plus it has an antiseptic in it) before on a couple of very fat Rhombodera sp. females after the male punctured their abdomens during mating. One female died shortly afterwards. But the other one, whose injuries appeared much worse, lived on for at least another month... and laid a fertile ooth just a few days after the incident. So I'm thinking it was proved not to be harmful, in at least in one circumstance. And I painted her up pretty good.
What I'm thinking of though is.... what if you painted a coat or two of this stuff on their abdomens before mating. It would provide a protective shield maybe, like another layer of skin. I think you would just have to be careful not to apply over the breathing spiracles on the sides of the abdomen. Seriously. Any thoughts or other concerns with this idea?
Edit: Or what about small, soft and flexible regular bandages (like Band Aids)?!!
You could remove them afterwards. Or maybe just cut out a small piece of the adhesive part of the bandage, and wrap the males claws with it beforehand? It would likely come off fairly easily with time... or misting with water to help it. Yes, I like that idea the best!!!
