    hi everyone :)

    G'day richoman!

im doing a talk on praying mantids in 6 days

Rick is right. All mantids will have a highly-varied hatch rate due to many aspects, including food intake, genetics & maturity. I've had 2 females of the same species & similar age have very different hatch rates. You should probably look at maximum quantities.

    Moth Flies

I caught them straight after my shower. Probably fine as feeders but once bitten, twice shy.

    Phyllium species

My favourite family of phasmids :) Nice pics.

    Moth Flies

I wouldn't recommend feeding these to mantids. Or anything that comes from the bathroom with chemicals flying this way & that. Last time I fed a moth fly to my mantid, it froze on its perched & fell off dead. The eggs of these little buggers need to be exterminated using a particular...

    lost mantis

This happens with Olga all the time :P I don't know why she leaves them unattended because she can never find them afterwards. I have to drive halfway across Sydney to help her & I can usually spot them within the first minute upon entering her room  Good fun! But yes, they're...

    Another Aussie Mantid ID

Nice work, Olga! Did you manage to get another photo from him or did you work your magic on a previous photo? I can say with a little more confidence that it looks apterous, which would point to female Bolbe sp. What do you reckon, Christian?

    should i get a katydid?

I've kept Caedicia simplex for a little while. Not my cup of tea but they're interesting critters. Positives: they are really easy to keep; lettuce is an adequate food source; feeding them on rose petals makes them turn pink! Negatives: do not keep adults in your bedroom cos they start...

    Orthodera novaezealandiae pictures

The photos look professional, especially the 3rd one. Well done. Orthodera are one of my favourite varieties at the moment.

    Another Aussie Mantid ID

This mantid was found in Toowoomba, QLD (about 125km inland from Brisbane). I'd say it is about 2cm long. It doesn't look like it has wings which leads me to believe it is an adult/immature female Bolbe sp. Or else, I'm thinking an immature male Paraoxypilus sp. I apologise for the poor quality...

My first mantid, with questons from a newb

It's a subadult Garden Mantis (O. ministralis). A sure way to determine its sex is to count the segments on the underside of its abdomen from the tip to its legs. Females have 6 segments due to overlapping & the formation of a 'scoop,' while males have >6. In the daytime, I usually find...

    Hello from Perth

he didn't specify whether it was an adult or not, that's why i said Falsey.

    Hello from Perth

Hey mate, welcome the the forum. PM sent, by the way. I've learnt a lot since finding this site & I hope you will too. Ain't no new zealand mantis in Australia. Same genus but a different species known as the Garden Mantis (O. ministralis). It could also be a False Garden Mantis...

    Fruit Flies

+1! I find that a mantis is more than capable of taking down anything 1/2 its size, if that helps. You can always start your own ff culture. You can prep it mixture yourself & put it outside in a shady area (next to a compost bin is a goldmine). I found that by doing this, both Drosophila...

    Mantids of the future

The present-day Giant Northern Termite or Darwin Termite (Mastotermes darwiniensis) looks to be the link between termites & cockroaches. Still, it is a very primitive species as far as termites go. You can say this classification debate is comparable to the denunciation of Pluto as a planet.

    Grizzled bark mantis

I love the mottled colouration. I look forward to getting some Gyromantis down the track.
