Voice Recognition

When ever my mantis hears my voice she goes crazy. She immediately starts for the top of the enclosure. Then she starts crawling in circles and figure eights really fast on the top screen of her enclosure the more she hears it. So now I feel like I should be commited because I talk to my mantis. I hope I'm not the only one. I read that mantids can only hear high pitched sounds like from bat echolocation and they can not hear low frequency sounds. Is this true? Can mantids recognize someones voice?

They can here high pitch sounds from bat echolocation. Bats are one of there main predators so when they are flying and here echolocation they will immediately fly down towards the ground to avoid the bat. But since she is in an encousure so she cant escape, she might think a bat is trying to get her and she'lltry to get away but a is locked in. So she gets scared and crazy . Does that make any sense?

Never thought of that. I could just be frightening the heck out of her.

I am going to do some experiments and look into this further.

What type of enclosure is she in?

When I hold a deli cup in my hand and speak, I can feel the vibrations in the cup.

I have never had a mantis freak out and run around because of it, but I guess it can be frightening to some.

My T. sinensis used to start pacing and tapping around when I walked into the room. It made me feel bad that I couldn't have them all out at once.

Oh your right! Females in most species cant fly. Then its interesting why she freaks out. Still she might think there is a bat???

I have her in a fish tank (think its 5 gallons) with a regular wire screen top. I put her in here till I can make a smaller enclosure. She molted recently and I think her old half gallon is too small for her next molt.

I am going to see if i can upload a video of her freaking out so you can see exactly what i'm talking about. I'll post the link shortly.

you are not alone....lol i talk to all my mantids, specialy the adults, lol

I talk to mine as well. :blush: My poor husband gets annoyed with it. Maybe he is jealous cause I am always telling them how good looking they are. :mellow:

Here is a link to a video of my mantis acting a little crazy. She started acting up as soon as i approached her. So maybe she recognizes me by sight. This is kinda mild. She usually is going 50 MPH faster. Please disregard my voice. I usually don't sound like Buffalo Bill from silence of the lambs when i talk.

She might just want to get out? put her out on a bed,table etc. and let her wander. Make sure you dont lose her. Also try to feed her a cricket. my old S. Limbata did the same thing and would never cool down. I think its only in the jumpy species.

I think I have heard that not all mantids can hear that.

Do you talk to him when you feed him? He might just associate your voice with food.

Not so much. I do think she is associating me with her getting out for a little while. I had someone else talk to her and she did nothing. as soon as I got close to her she went nuts again. Then I noticed that she was going crazy when ever I walked by her enclosure. So I'm thinking it might not be voice but visual recognition.
