http://www.bsos.umd.edu/cebh/yagerlab/Projects.html Ran into this article and thought it was fascinating.

While it may be that she can't exctly hear your voice in the sense that we understand, there may be some other sensory perception she is picking up, maybe even something that relates to your voice (she picks up the vibration somewhere), or maybe just your presence. But it sounds like there's still a lot to learn about their way of perceiving the world, too.

Cool stuff.

But, Russ and I both talk to our mantids. It never hurt anyone and no one's ever been committed for it.

Very interesting article. I wonder which species do the males hear and the females do not. Female budwings can not fly (i don't think). So I wonder if the females never needed to evolve hearing. In addition, nymphal deafness may rule out voice recognition. Not sure whether she is half way through her life or not. She is an L-5. Does anyone know if she is halfway or not?

And how about that tiger beetle? Not only can it change its course when it hears a bat approaching, but it clicks back to confuse the bat. Mother nature is so cool.

Glad to hear that others talk to their mantids too. What do you talk about?

It usually amounts to commentary, or "You want to come out?" type stuff. Someone mentioned critiquing their hunting, I'm afraid I'm guilty of that one too :)

My Budwing just goes nuts in general when disturbed. I don't even need to say anything. She's difficult to feed because as soon as I come close, she's ready to run laps! They're just really active I suppose.

I think I may be experiencing the same thing. I don't think she is recognizing me so much from voice or sound. I think she may be picking up the vibrations that my voice create on the enclosure. It could also be sight recognition. I had someone else briefly get close and talk to her and she did nothing. However, that was brief because they felt silly and had nothing to talk about. I want to try with several other people before coming to my own conclusion on the matter.
