    Freshwater Invertabrates

You'll like them until you get bitten by one, then not so much. I've been bitten by these in the wild and have no urge to keep them. Just not my thing. But they are still pretty cool to watch when they're eating.

    Tactical Games

Judging by the number of gaming related threads it seems many of you play PC games. I indulge in that as well; my primary interest has always been in the tactical/flight sim genre. Operation Flashpoint and its sequel, Armed Assault, are second-to-none in this regard. Playing these with a group...

    Dead Space

I played it. It was okay, kind of like "The Thing" in space. If you like that sort of genre, I would recommend it. But it isn't the best game ever made. I much preferred Fallout 3.

    Temporary heating

The most important thing is...don't overthink it. Keeping the terrarium next to a radiator or desk lamp, far enough away so that the temperature stays constant, is probably the best idea. I find that during the colder months, things dry out much more easily so you will want to mist more often...

    Intro

Hey, welcome to the forum. They'll live for a few months, depending on how they're taken care of. Times tend to vary widely though. It may be hard to get it "right" the first time, especially with Chinese. It looks like you got some ooths out of it, though. Hatch those and you can start over...

Males won't couple to the females.

How fortuitous. Now the female that was mated last night is laying an ooth tonight. So, it should be fertile. The male was able to escape as well so he's still viable.

Males won't couple to the females.

Good news: Finally got two of them to couple up. One was the male who was nearly killed in his earlier encounter.

Do guns kill people or people kill people or if it's really the bullet, or the impact or damage to specific organs

Thank you for your service, Phil. You bring up a very interesting point, regarding how people view self defense (at least when it comes to doing so at the level of lethal force) in our society, particularly the United States but even in the UK, from which our laws about self defense are...

    Wing buds

Those are wing buds, for sure. Ao to telling if they're swollen, I don't really know--my Chinese are always visibly bigger than they were before they molt, but they always get progressively thicker. There will be a couple of molts with wing buds before the wings actually come out and pump up.

    Poll: Do Mantids Feel Pain?

They process sensory input but they do it differently. You are not dealing with an organism that has much in common with you. While the head movement and tendency to "track" moving objects may appear to be a sign of intelligence, ask yourself this--how much of it is our tendency to...

Males won't couple to the females.

I always let them try to mate out of the enclosure so the male can escape. The female was just too fast this time.

Males won't couple to the females.

Rick is correct, he sits there and doesn't hook up. I'll give it another week or two. These have been adults for several weeks already. Fortunately, my male who I thought was badly hurt is now active and running around. Took him out and he flew across the room. I think he'll be ready to try...

Males won't couple to the females.

Pretty much describes it all. I'm trying to get my T.Sinensis to mate. The males always hop on the female's back, but they never couple up. You can see the male's organ opening and trying to do something, but they never make contact. I've tried letting them sit there, blowing on them (like...

    T. sinensis Ootheca Update & Questions

When I first got into this hobby I'd throw the ooths in a sealed jar (with some gauze covering it) and let it sit, in a dry room, for a few weeks. I have never, ever not had one hatch if it was fertile. Nowadays I'd mist but with T. Sinensis it's not a big deal.

Lost two Adult T. Sinensis - Anyone recognize these symptoms?

Phil, That explains it. I'm happy that I'm not remembering incorrectly. I supposed you are all entitled to the results of my "autopsy." As much as it pained me to do it, I think it may shed some light on what was going on. There were no wormlike parasites or anything of that nature. The...

Lost two Adult T. Sinensis - Anyone recognize these symptoms?

We did dissection of lubber grasshoppers when I took entomology in college (going on ten years now, but I'm sure insects haven't changed since then). I'm no expert but it's not particularly difficult. They have an integument that you cut away--carefully--and the organs are just there. Very...
