    my mantis bit my lip

It was just kissing you! They don't have lips of their own, so it was just doing the best it could.

need female ghost adult or sub adult

Hello, it seems that of my seven ghosts, I had at least five males. One female just died while I was at work via bad molt - she fell! The last ghost is still sub-sub adult, and only had one raptorial claw....so either she won't make it or, if she does, all my adult males will already be dead...

Woo hoo! New babies arrived today

Psyched! Despite some USPS foolishness, I received my four E. macrops babies (l2 or l3, almost one inch long already) healthy and strong today. They're freakin' cool! I can't wait to watch these guys grow up - and I mean GROW up....maybe I can scare the &^%& out of my wife with them...

    New kind of gut loading!

Update: Now they're asking me to put on day time TV. I wonder why they've all started acting so.....sappy?

    Lost my first mantis!

Bummer - quick question - how big a container are they in? Room is also a factor in canabalism, at least so I have read. I had seven ghosts living communally in a 2 gallon hexagonal fish tank. Now six, but not due to being eatern. One of the males just dropped dead on me the other day, no...

    Life span question

Maybe.... But WHY would you do that to him? Are you so cruel? Shame on you! :P ;)

My male gongys are trying to mate with each other

Don't you mean he'll just have to make DUDE?

    New kind of gut loading!

Yeah, they sure do. The sap has a 2.5 to 3% sugar content, which is what they're after (and why it makes yummy syrup). Wonder if the mantids would prefer it on pancakes?

    Pseudocreobotra wahlbergii cricket binge

Paranoid of overfeeding? Sheesh, I think I'm a major offender of overfeeding...I find they just don't eat when they're not hungry. I always try to keep some food in the cage, since I keep my ghosts all together. They're not all that predisposed to canibalism, but I figure better safe than sorry.

    New kind of gut loading!

One of my other hobbies is Maple tapping (for syrup) in the late winter. when collecting the sap, I find lots of flies & moths, which I've been collecting and feeding to my mantids. The other night, I saw one of the ghosts catch a moth, and tuck in to the abdoman...and which point the darn...

    Issues with gongy falling?

Without having read the entire thread, I have a rather odd question for you all.... Do your houses/appartments/whatever ever shake for some reason? Forced air going on, train or trucks nearby, or whatever? Maybe even something that you don't even notice any more is just enough to shake them...

    N. Campanulata

I grow this plant very successfully in a mix of Long Fibered Spagnum moss and "orchid mix." (Bark, charcol, etc - I used the Schultz mix when I can find it). I've never added limestone, but it does grow on limestone cliffs in the wild. From my experience, this is not required. Mine grow great...

And once again, Phil, you made me chuckle! :D

    Yay! Babies hatched

Yen, For sure, I have fruit flies! I know about their canibalistic tenencies....kind of counting on it to thin the ranks a bit. It's amazing to me how, even in the first day, so many nymphs are just die. Such a large percentage of weak babies....the bottom of the hatching chamber is littered...

    Yay! Babies hatched

I collected some Chinese ooths this fall from my garden, and decided that I wanted to hatch them inside for a winter crop. Well, I had all but given up on them...I came home from work today, and BOTH had hatched! :D So I'm pretty psyched. Chinese 1st instar nymphs are HUGE...

nypmhs shedding to adult! Whoo hoo!

Gadzooks! I had no idea they were so long-lived a species! 16 ooths from ONE female? Did you mate her more than once? How does a ghost male mate, anyway? I mean, don't they have Halloweenies?

nypmhs shedding to adult! Whoo hoo!

That sets me at ease. Thanks Kat!

    Enclosure Pics

I gotta ask - why is there concern about a cage being too big? They live just fine outside in the open. Is the problem getting to the food? If that's all, then is that surmoutable by simply putting in MORE food, to increase the concentration? Sorry if this is s dumb question...

    Ghost Colony Terrarium

Sweet set up. I have seven ghosties in a two gallon hexogon. One lousy fake grass plan (3" pot) in there, and a screen top. Seems like plenty of room, and keeps the food closer at hand....er....claw. I love this species. They're so docile, my 2 1/2 year old loves to hold one and have it...
