    Vomit Frustration

I had a mantis vomit on me when I tried to feed it a firefly. Took a few bites, dropped the fly, and through up. I tried again, a few days (and a few regular meals) later, and the same result. I haven't tried fireflies as feeders since.

grumble - BEAUTIFUL ooth from unmated female

UPDATE! YAY! Successfull mating! After riding around on her back for over 48 hours (and they both had meals during this time....it was hysterical), he finally did the deed....for several hours! Man, if people were expected to go through 2 straight days of foreplay, there would be NO kids...

grumble - BEAUTIFUL ooth from unmated female

Yeah, that's what I'm counting on...but I am so darn impatient (I really have to work on that). The male has been mature for, oh, 6 days or so now...and he still shows not interest in mating. Anyone have any mantis viagra?

grumble - BEAUTIFUL ooth from unmated female

MAN! I know females (at least for ghosts) mature more quickly than the males...But what a shot in the teeth. My male matured the other day, and not 24 hours later my female laid a gorgeous, gigantic ooth. She's could have waited a week? Dang. Needed to vent that.

    Getting my first oothecae

Hey Jeff, Don't toss that second ooth - I had a similar experience with a wild collected ooth that I kept over the winter. It hatched out 3 numphs...sheesh...but every day 2 or 3 more for about 4 or five days. Not really what I hoped for froma chinese ooth, but at least it's easier to keep...

    ARG!

I know it's always a risk to house mantids together, but for the most part, ghosts seem ok with it. As long as you feed them enough. I had my second female molt to adult yesterday - a beautiful green & white tiger striped one, at that. She promtly became a snack for her sister who molted...

    really? REALLY?

Aha! A few more started coming out this morning! My daughters and I actually got to see them wiggling out of the ooth, and hanging there trying to get out of that membrane! SO FREAKING COOL! :) :D

    really? REALLY?

Angel, I know well of their canibalistic nature....I was counting on it (what am I going to do with 300 nymphs?), but now I think I will have to be rather carefull! I certainly won't toss it yet....maybe if nothing comes within the next two weeks.

    really? REALLY?

We caught a wild female Chinese mantis last fall, and she laid a beautiful ooth for us just before she passed. My kid and I have been pretty psyched for it to hatch.... I think I may have kept it too humid for a short period (had some mold in the cage, and even on the ooth) - but Ifigured it...

    ARRRRRGGGG! Stupid Idolos!!!

Oy! Call me crazy, but don't they live on stick & such in nature? You would think they would LOOK before the molt, for Pete's sake. Anyway, I think you're right. If I ever do get these guys again, I will not have any stick low down. I kinda like the glue idea - it had occurred to me...

    ARRRRRGGGG! Stupid Idolos!!!

So aren't these things at least smart enough to NOT molt right above the floor? The silly thing had a cage at least 14" high...and chose a perch 2" above the floor. So naturally, when molting, it didn't have room. :poop: Anyone with high blood pressure should not raise Idolos. :taz...

    mantis id

Man, I REALLY like that first pic - the one with the mantid crawling up the bush (or tree or whatever). The lighting in that photo just looks cool to me. It's almost like a mantis silhouette!
