    Idolo's are so freaking ANNOYING

OY! Isn't the the exact opposite of what Tier reccomended? Just goes to show, I guess, that there really is no perfect setup. I have plastic walls, the remaining one cannot climb...so it does use the sticks. The two that had bad molts never fell....they just got stuck in their old skins and...

    learned an important lesson today

Yah, pretty much as the title suggests....I didn't do that. Must have jarred the lid loose while feeding one of the other cages, or something. Suffice to say, my H. mulitspina ooth hatched today while we were shopping. The ooth is about the size of a cherry, I guess....but, man, they must be...

    Idolo's are so freaking ANNOYING

Egads, man! I have great conditions for these jerks, but they just DIE! Well, once got EATEN by a cage mate, so you can't blame that one.... Not like there wasn't enough food in there. Out of 4 l2's, the first to molt was just fine. Then one had a bad molt. then one got et. Now, the final...

Here it comes! Biggest CP show on the East Coast

Ha! Just realized it's the 8Th annual show....not 7th. Duh. Also, fixed the dates - the weekend is 25th and 26th, NOT 26th and 27th. Sheesh. What's with me?

    Success!

Hey Paul, If YOURS are any indication....she will. What did your one female lay? 20? Something rediculous like that?

    Success!

So psyched! Now let's just hope she starts laying some nice ooths.

    Idolomantis diabolica

You're going to HATE me for this one.... But what we seem to be getting burned by molting larvae..... BA-DUMP PISH!

Why do we have these guys?

Does "because they're freaking cool" count as a valid reason? There is something inherently fascinating about a predator that is so good at what it does. Ever hear of a cat's grace? Person who came up with that expression never met a mantid. Heck, mantids have two distict...

    Idolomantis diabolica

Let's try posting this again - last time that silly forum error messed me all up. I had another (probubly ill-concieved) idea for an idolo cage.... Why not a wooden bird cage? The whole thing is MADE of sticks (rungs) after all, so gripping wouldn't be a problem. I think it would have to be...

    Stay away from me!

Well Gee Wiz! You're doing WONDERS for their self-esteem by laughing at them! :P

    Terrarium with lots of twigs

I have some young idolo's myself...and I'm toying with the idea of getting a small wooden birdcage... You know, a cage where the whole thing is made of rungs. I know that may present a humidity issue for most, but I have an indoor grow chamber ("greenhouse" of sorts) for tropical plants...and...

Dang it! Bad molt for one idolo going to L3

Hey Rick, I've started doing that, too....maybe they technically don't NEED it, but I guess it can't hurt, right? We'll see what happens...the other two L2's aren't eating...I guess that means it's almost time for them, too.

Dang it! Bad molt for one idolo going to L3

Rats! My second idolo (first one molted just fine) to molt to L3 got stuck in its old skin. It didn't fall, as they seem to do when older, but the skin didn't come off correctly, and the legs are all messed up....one is missing, two are bent. I can't tell if the raptor legs work or not. So...

    Mantis at Large=Large Mantis

Yep, I think you have it right. I have seen a Chinese or two over 4"...though it's rare. I actually have a MALE in my yard right now that's easily over 3.5", which is pretty huge for a male. He was actually longer than the female he found. So I would beleive it if someone told me...

    Mantis at Large=Large Mantis

I trust Yen on this...so maybe it's not a European...or maybe the picture is REALLY making it look bigger than it really is. We found an adult female European on Fire Island a couple weeks ago - she was just about 2.5" I would say... I've just read so many fish stories about HUGE...

    Pre-sub to Sub-adult Idolomantises

I just got mine, and the first just made L3. However, I think you're right about the weight thing. For me, I use screen tops on my cages, and I never had a problem with any moltings until the mantids got heavier. For example, I had five ghosts molt to adult easily (they're slender)...

More legal stupidity Since we're talking about stupid laws, here is something for your enjoyment. I especially like: "It is illegal for a woman to be on the street wearing “body hugging clothing”." immediately followed by: "Women may go topless in public, providing it is not being used as a...

    Mantis at Large=Large Mantis

That thing is NOT 5 or 6" as reported in the link. Great looking mantis, and big to be sure, but not as big as reported. I have one of those cages pictured...AND one of those spatula thingies. I would put that mantis in the realm of 3.5" That's the average size for chinese mantids around me...
