something not right with my african

This morning when i got up, I noticed my mantid was going off on one. Her normal place is attached to the roof of the enclosure, but today she was trying to walk around...very unsucessfully. She couldn't balance, kept falling over, and if she flipped over, she couldn't get back on her feet...

    Handling a mantis.

Thanks for the replies guys :D the mantis moulted on Thursday, and i know eough to leave well alone just after moulting, I generally do not spray for 24 hrs afterwards either, and leave her enclosure alone in case I knock her off. The abdomen is very thick in width. I tried to coax her...

    Handling a mantis.

My African Manid has just moulted into an adult, and I have yet to hold her (I believe it's a she..the wings come right over the abdomen and has 7 segments??) anyway, what is the best way to pick her up and hold her? Are they prone to biting and attacking you when you try to? The last time she...

    pulsating abdomen

Today i noticed the abdomen on my mantis was pulsating, as though he was breathing. What does this mean? I noticed a similar thing on one of the crickets I put in his enclosure, and that moulted, so could I take this as an indication of my manyid preparing to moult?

As i write this, he is just finishing off a sizable cricket, so I am happy he is eating well (just want to see him stalk and catch them now :) ) Thanks for the info guys, especially about the possibility of them attack my mantis when he moults. I'll get them removed later. i put so many in...

    Are crickets canibals?

I have put a few crickets in with my mantis, to try and tempt him to eat, but I have yet to see him eat, though he did make a few fake attacks when I put the in. This morning, I noticed three of the crickets were dead, two had holes in their abdomens and one was 'sucked dry', but the mantis did...

Moulting - I noticed too late!

well, I did ask for an african species, but like so many petshops they never give the proper latin/scientific name for them, so in truth I don't exactly know, but from the pictures i've seen and from what I could read, it would appear to be a giant african mantis And yes, the size increase is...

Moulting - I noticed too late!

I misted my tank this morning..as I do most morning, and then I thought I'd have a look at the little guy since he doesn't move alot. As I looked in his tank I noticed he had moulted :) and he is a nice pale green colour. I hadn't expected him to moult so soon, so this came as a surprise...

what can I expect from my mantis

@Rick I tried a search before I asked, but it wouldn't bring anything up that I could use (or at all in some cases) whether thats me not using the search feature correctly or what, I don't know, but it's the first thing I usually check :) @ Jay she pretty used to my weird obsessions now...

    Spam

yeah, unfortunatly admin verification can put new members off a little as they compare your 'tough measures' to the gestapo, and prefere an easier sign up..but usually they are the same kind of people who hate all the spam that we also hate...you can't really win, only make a trade off....sucks...

what can I expect from my mantis

cool :D he looks fairly large at the moment (compared to the rest of him, it's 2 to 3 times more girth then his upper body) so I'll see, but I can deffinatly see this becoming a bit more of an obsession then a curiosity..but the other half has said i have to reduce my fish collection to 1 if...
