Any chance of recovery? Do praying mantis' suffer?

I don't think I've cried, but I was pretty sad a couple times. I guess it is easy to get attached to these little critters...

    Broken Leg Advice?

So I've got this Mantis, and she's getting old, but still pretty healthy. Today she somehow broke her back knee. Is there anything I should do? Or just not worry about it. Either I could make a tiny splint somehow, or else just amputate... Ideas?

    A mismolt or what?

OK, so its about a month later and that mis-molted mantis is still living outside of our office. We've been feeding it grasshoppers almost every day which she seems to enjoy. Anyway, its getting really cold now here in Ohio. Bits of snow in the air and all that. SO: should I take her inside...

    A mismolt or what?

OK, so I have been enjoying the care of wild caught mantis' for a couple years now and think I know a decent amount about the local Ohio varieties, but what is going on with this one? She lives outside my office on this shrub. As you can see, her wings look strange. I am guessing that they...

Just hatched my first Ooth! (w Pic)

OK, so after giving away a bunch of the mantises to friends and releasing others. I was left with only about 12. The Culture I bought at Petco didnt produce any flies (after the first day) for almost a week. I was running around like an idiot for a few days trying to catch tiny flies to feed...

Just hatched my first Ooth! (w Pic)

Thanks for the info guys. I drove up to the Petco in Strongsville and got the Jar of fruitflies. What a great product! I sprinkeled a few into the containers of each of my mantis' and watched some of them enjoying their tiny meals! A problem though: I used all of the flies that were in the...

Just hatched my first Ooth! (w Pic)

There is no Petco within an hour of here. I called the 3 local pet stores and no luck.

Just hatched my first Ooth! (w Pic)

Thanks for the advice everyone. I gave a bunch of these little guys away to 2 friends who each kept a few and let the others free in their yards. I let some free in my own yard as well. So now I'm down to about 14 left, not counting all of the little ones still coming out of the Ooth. The...

Just hatched my first Ooth! (w Pic)

I'm in Ohio, and yes these are native mantids. I have already released a few and plan to release more. I do NOT have any culture started, so I guess I will buy one. How quickly do they need the feeder fruit flies?

Just hatched my first Ooth! (w Pic)

Back in December I found an ooth on a Christmas tree. Many months passed with no activity. Yesterday (June 23) It finally hatched! I had the Ooth attached to the wall in a cd container with a net over the top. After they hatched, I transferred a bunch of them into a terrarium with a dirt...

    Transplanting Heads?!

All that political stuff? Ugh. I could to to some political website if I wanted that, or just talk to the idiots in my office... Anyways, I created this topic because it was interesting, not because I was suggesting we all make franken-bugs or anything. Just like that mantis photo someone...

    oothecae advice

This seems complicated. Is there some post somewhere to break it down for first timers? I just buy this dormant culture and add water when the mantises hatch and I need food?

OK, so what do I do to feed the hatch-lings?

    Transplanting Heads?!

The article seems to say that either the heads ARE working, or that they're just sending some vague pheromone/hormone signals. Which is it? Maybe this would work with a bug that does not need to eat much, instead of a "carnivorous" mantis. For instance, moths don't eat much in their adult form...

    Transplanting Heads?!

It seems like the wound would have to be very clean and you'd have to have a way to hold the new head in place in such a way that the mantis would not knock it off with its arms. Still, I'm skeptical...

    Transplanting Heads?!

Read this article: http://io9.com/the-bizarre-history-of-insect-head-transplants-456738894 I have heard from some board members here about their mantises living on after being decapitated, but this idea of attaching the head from some other bug is crazy! Anyone tried this? Does it work with...

    oothecae advice

I've got my mantis ooth in a net container out in my garage for the winter. I expect that it'll hatch in the next 1 -3 months. What do I feed them when they hatch? Do they just eat each other? I dont want to buy fly larvae until they hatch, but if I wait too long, they could die before the...

    oothecae advice

After chopping down a Christmas tree this weekend, i found a big mantis Ooth on another customer's tree! I saved it, so now I've gotta figure out what to do with it. Put it in a terrarium in the garage until spring, then bring it in the house and mist it daily? ANy way to prevent mold? I've...
