    New house for Twiggy Girl

Hi, nice setup. Whats the concern with the pillpugs? They arent necessary, but will clean up the scraps of bugs your mantis tosses out, helping to discouarage things like mites. Springtails will do the same job basicly, if you dont want to use isopods(aka pill bugs, rollie pollies, sow bugs)

    Gut load recipes for mantids?

Hi as far as I know theres no need for anything fancy here. Mantids dont need supplements with their bugs like reptile and amphibians. I think the mantids do get a mouthfull of whatever their feeders eat so I like to feed bananas or other fruit before feeding, that way they get a nice treat.

    Hygrometer

You wont get a hygrometer that is accurate above 80ish percent unless you spend a lot. The cheap guage style are my preference  but digital type will be fine too. If your substrate is moist and your lid allows for some ventilation odds are good that you humidity is fine already. Personally I've...

Rescued Mantis, a few questions from beginner!

Yes, odds are good she's mated, but she will lay eggsacs whether she's been fertilized or not. Also its possible to attract a mate sometimes, depending on where you keep her. Sometimes a male will come looking for her from her scent/phermones.  Lastly although many mantids only live a while...

How long does it take ooths to hatch

Hi, if you have 2 and know ones a dud, you could try weighing them. Fertilized/developing ooths should be heavier. If you dont have a scale you can make a ballance. As for hatching times,  most soecuez have hatched between 6 weeks and 3 mos in my for me:)

    Larvae climbing to lid

Hi, the reason larvae climb to the top is CO2 build up. Once they start covering the holes they increase the problem very quickly.  As for trying to buy flies in the mail, dont get me started...Ive spent more than 300 dollars buying nothing but stinky rotten disgusting slime.  Good luck

2 months later and more hatched from same ooth???

MantisGirl13, yup I'm looking forward to it. I have the ghost ooth aswell as a type of Creobroter and Tarachodula pantherina, which arrived with a nymph partially emerged and dried out, so I am worried it may not hatch me any babies:

    The Amazing Oothcea

I have had many no hatches, and several very poor hatches.. I've had oothecae hatch in the mail.. I've had an old  ootheca hatch(after I gave up on it) a lone ghost, whom I found hanging out on the wall, late one evening. One of my favourites though, was my first ootheca, it was a big...

    Non-mated female laying ooths.

    Glad the boot came off:)

    Non-mated female laying ooths.

Yeah treat her same. You can mate after she's laid her first ooth, and after then she should lay a few more fertile ooths. Adults often live quite a while and lay several ooths I doubt she'll be at her end for sometime if you keep her unless you are putting her outside. As for the boot, I'd do...

    Yeast in FF cultures.

The live/active yeast is used to innoculate it, and the dead yeast is used as a protein and vitamin supplement to increase yields. Yeast leftover from brewing beer is sold as a nutritional supplement for people aswell. In australia, where they brew lots of beer, they sell it as a healthy...

    Wax worms/Lesser Beemoth

I havent raised these yet, but lepidoptera often cant fly when reared on artificial diets lacking in omega-3 fatty acids. If you dont get a better answer, try tossing some flaxseed into their food mix

How long does it usually take to receive a mantis you ordered?

Hi ladyarcana55, It can be difficult getting mantids, but it should be much easier now that you've found this forum. You are more patient than me, if I dont get a reply within a week, I'd move on to someone else. I am confident I know who you are dealing with too, because he's the only person...
