    Source for Metal microscreen?

Hey guys, So I am told that brass microscreen (300microns/holes smaller than 1/16th on an inch) is what i need to prevent escapes of my smallest feeders.  Problem is a tiny piece seems to very expensive. Does anyone know where to get a 300 micron metal mesh screen for a reasonable price? I'd...

    WTB Phyllocrania/Ghost oothecae

Like the topic says, I'm looking for an ootheca of any Phyllocrania sp/Ghost mantis, and/or a Hymenopus coronatus. So far I've tried to get a culture going of both types, 3 times each, so far. With only single, lonely l-2 P.paradoxica. If you have a spare fresh ooth, I'd love to hear from you!

    Busy week for us!!!

There's few things as satisfying and exciting as an otheca hatching. I'm currently taking care of a mix Miomantis, Orthodera and Phyllocrania hatchlings..It can be taxing but so great. I probably shouldn't jinx it either, but I can't help myself sometimes:D I ordered 4 more types of ooths...

    New hobbyist

Hi kwright, welcome to the wonderfull world of mantids. I've read that eggsacs/oothecae of chinese(and most temperate species) do not survive well unless they were exposed to cold, so it may not have been your fault.  I personally have also noticed problems with too much moisture/poor air...

    Mantid Fly?!?

Turns out, it might be easier than I thought.. taken from bugguide.net: "Larvae in the subfamily Mantispinae are restricted to feeding on eggs within egg sacs of spiders. Larvae in the other more primitive subfamilies (i.e. our genera Plega and Nolima) have been reared on immatures of...

    Using dubias as feeders...........

Did you raise them or acquire them from elsewhere? I have read about people that had issues with store bought feeders. Ranging from throwing away an unpaletable superworm to death from crickets. Although these shouldn't pose a problem, it seems that if cared for badly enough, they can taste bad...

    Mantid Fly?!?

Yeah, they are cool looking. As far as breeding, all mantisflies start out life in spider eggsacs, so that complicates things. I would love to try though since they seem like theyd be able to hunt all those annoying little flies that breed in my plants' soil (maybe kill off some of the fat...

    Field sweeping plankton

Rick, lol thats not far from the truth.. after several failed purchase attempts for flies, I've resorted to harvesting mosquitos larvae from ponds. My dartfrogs and my mantids love them wiggly little buggers. Never thought breeding mosquito's would be something I'd consider..(I know, I know..Im...

Culture producing way more flies than I need!

Hey Paxalotl, you can dump them from time to time to keep the culture from spoiling, but this time of year especially, they will breed with wild flies and the offspring will be fliers so may not want let them go free.. I'd suggest  using smaller cultures, unless you have a lot of mouths to feed...

    Ooths hatch HOW many times?!?!?

After, reading this post yesterday I put a cup on an ooth that hatched last week today there's ten more nymphs scrambling around. Oops..

    Field sweeping plankton

So I've found myself in need of small feeders and being as it's summer, I thought it should be pretty easy to go harvest some plankton, but I have never actually harvested them before, so I have a few questions. Is tall grass the best place to find leaf hoppers and other tiny inverts? Whats...

    .

I personally have never got around to finding excelsior, so I've tried a other options. With the coffee filters, I had good results, but they tended to collapse if the media is too watery.  I like to use the more rigid cone shaped filters, since they can't collapse. I also like to use pieces of...

    Catching the bug

Well, all of my mantids have passed a while ago, and I've been missing them. Then, last week someone found a female miomantis perched on their head (after leaving my place, riding a bike a few miles, going shopping and then found it when infront of a mirror). I was a bit surprised to hear this...
