    Haania sp. (Moss Mantis)

That new species is so cool. I love that face.

    D. lobata females and their will to protect their young.

Interesting discussion. Aryia, sorry about losing a favorite mantis. That is cool you got to see the babies crawl all over the female. I get nervous when I've placed L1s on adults to photograph them together. I've never lost one that way but know it's a possibility. I have noticed some of my...

    Keeping Katydids

I've never seen a pink one in Minnesota in the wild, but I kept Oblong-winged (pink morphs) for a while thanks to Yen. I had them in a terrarium that I had originally used for mantids. I fed mine mostly bramble in the beginning but discovered that they loved a variety of plants and tree leaves...

    My first Orchids

Your orchid photos are beautiful. They are one of my favorites to photograph as nymphs...not too exciting as adults, though the mating is interesting because of the size difference.

    Its calender time!

MantidBro, I'm not understanding what you are saying. Many of the photos on the 2015 calendar post will be used for the calendar.

    Its calender time!

Sticky just started a thread to remind people about the calendar. The deadline is today. So, people can still submit photos. I may extend the deadline for a few days as I don't have time to work on the calendar until later this week, though I suspect the majority of the people who are going to...

    getting labels off plastic jars

I mostly recycle containers for shipping mantids and don't bother to remove the stickers. But I had read somewhere that peanut butter works well and have used that a couple of times with stubborn stickers. Otherwise I have just soaked them in hot water.

    L1/first instar comparison (appearance only)

I'm reviving an old topic that I started a few years ago and posted last time exactly one year ago! Thanks to Precarious for the opportunity to photograph a new species for me: Euchomenella heteroptera. I literally had to dust off my macro set up since I haven't used it all year. Unfortunately...

    Its calender time!

dmina, a few of your questions, including the cost, can be found in the guidelines: http://mantidforum.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=33804 The official deadline is tomorrow. I won't have time to start working on the calendar until next weekend. I don't know if we'll extend the deadline as I...

    Undead Mantis?

I've seen it happen but I don't know if I've had one live as long as two days. I'd rather mine just get eaten than have to watch a headless mantis wandering around.

    Sally's mantis thread start 05/13

Good luck with your haania! Nice job with your other species you are keeping. I wish I had the variety that you do. I went from around 25 species down to 5.

    Shipping temperatures and heatpacks

Are you shipping priority express (typically overnight in most areas)? Most of the time I use the Uniheat brand that are 40 hour, 60 and 72 hours.

    Shipping temperatures and heatpacks

I live in Minnesota where we have very cold winters. I find it most challenging when I'm shipping in the winter to a warm place. I use heat packs with a shorter duration in those instances. I typically use a heat pack when the temp on either end is supposed to be in the 30s. But I buy boxes from...

Phyllocrania paradoxa at L1 through L4

Nice L1 images. I've been keeping and breeding this species for 3.5 years. I hope you will consider submitting some photos for our annual forum calendar.

    Idolomantis diabolica

I have one of those reptile screen cages that I used outdoors in the summer of 2012 and 2013. I put some mantids outdoors to give them some natural sunlight but I brought them in at night because I was worried about critters trying to break into the screen. (Have had an issue with chipmunks.)...

Keeping subadult and adult ghost mantids together?

Is your adult mantis a female? If so, I would separate them. The amount of food, size of the container and other things factor in. This species is less cannibalistic but there is always a chance.

Will my mantises survive While I am Gone For One Week?

I travel a lot and am usually take 4 or more 7 – 12 day trips a year. I explained my self-feeding system a few times in the past but couldn't find my posts when I searched. I set up a self-feeding system in advance. About ten days before I leave I have fresh blue bottle larvae (aka spikes)...
