    Sally's mantis thread start 05/13

Keep up the good work. I hope you can keep your Orchids going. That is one species I haven't had success with. Good luck with the Heterochaeta, too.

    Sacrifice or not to sacrifice

Yeah! Some years some species are more scarce around here, and there is a lot of discussion about habitat loss. But even if they were abundant, I wouldn't personally use them because I enjoy seeing them fluttering around out back. I also will not use dragonflies or honey bees as feeders. I think...

    SHIPPING

Sorry to hear about the Orchids hibiscusmile. Good discussion and points, and some of what I say may be repetitious. I started a new job a year ago and cut back on the number of species that I'm keeping and breeding this year. At the moment, I'm only shipping one to two packages a month to one...

    Thistle mantis fell

What instar is your Blepharopsis mendica? Is it OK? I've been raising this species for 3+ years now, though I'm about to let this last generation die out (no males and I'm ready for something different). I lost the first nymphs that I got 3.5 years ago because I misted them like other mantids...

    What Substrate should I use?

I, too, use paper towels in many of my enclosures (net & 80 ounce plastic enclosures). I've used cocoa fiber in the past in some of my terrariums. My mantids were rarely on the bottom of the enclosure, and I never noticed any issues with this.

    Hello from Minnesota!!

Hi Spencer, Orin has written a nice book Keeping the Praying Mantis. I've been raising mantids now for about four years. Others from Minnesota who join the forum don't seem to stick around too long. I hope you do. Good luck. Tammy

    Haania sp. (Moss Mantis)

Did the connection last a long time? I'm hoping you missed a connection and that ALL of your ooths turn out to be fertile! That's one the cutest nymphs. Thanks for the update on this species. I'm sure we are all hoping you have success.

Flightless fruit flies, not so flightless!

I haven't purchased new cultures for over two years now and have been keeping my own going without any that fly. When I was new to the hobby, I ended up with some fliers in one of my Mel cultures. But I read somewhere that Orin posted that phorid flies can sometimes get in your culture and lay...

A few weeks ago I purchased some mantids from Dave. Nice packing, fast shipping, great communication, good price. He included some freebies, too. Thanks Dave!

    Rhombodera valida headless mating attempt

Sorry to hear that. Well, not always quite as simple as that. Sally has had a lot of success breeding mantids. I've had a stalii female call that grabbed both of my males. I tried putting my male Valida in with my female the other day. She grabbed onto him but I was able to separate them.

Where do you guys get shipping supplies?

I buy my boxes from Uline because they are local, and I can pick up boxes on my way to work. I get the foam insulation from Menards or Lowe's and cut it to fit in the boxes. I've purchased heat packs from multiple sources, but lately I've been ordering them from Pangea Reptile because that's...
