How Long Does it Take a Female to Lay Eggs?

About 2 weeks after mating - but who knows when your already pregnant mantid will lay next

    Pre-Ooth preparations.

If you want minimal, you can hatch them in a 32oz cup, just check multiple times a day so when they do hatch you can move them (cup and all) to a larger enclosure.

    Pre-Ooth preparations.

For carolinas (any natives really) if you are going to leave them for any amount of time (meaning may only check on them once a day) I'd say one cubic foot per ooth. If you are checking them several times per day you could go smaller and start moving them to a more permanent home as they begin...

    insect enthusiast, now mantis hobbyist

Hello and welcome. Ghosts are so much fun - watching them interact is a blast. Also the mass dancing that happens when you drop feeders in :P

    Bugfest 2014!

Nice, I see you even have a low rail back there to throw over anyone who wants to buy mantids as feeders. Good luck with the expo!

    MOLTING...how often....?

Some of them spend a lot of their lives in trees. I have a few Euros outside who love my apple tree. Does that count? :P Okay bad attempt at lightening the mood with humor is over... If you will pay shipping ($10) I'll send you an adult Chinese, no charge. PM me your address. My paypal is...

    Pnigomantis medioconstricta

(Currently) just a few shots of my female having a snack. I also figured out how to actually zoom with my macro lens instead of shoving it in her face, so that was exciting :P http://soundspawn.com/browser.php?p=pnigomantis_medioconstricta

    Deroplatys desiccata or Deroplatys lobata?

There's definitely a lot of overlap, but from the (rather dense) scientific literature I've dug up the findings are as follows: Desiccata - Male 2.56"- 2.76" Female 2.95"- 3.15" Lobata - Male 1.77" Female 2.56"- 2.76" Truncata - Male N/A Female 2.56" - 2.76" I suspect these are mean values...

    Deroplatys desiccata or Deroplatys lobata?

They are both very picky - my research shows the same temperature and humidity requirements, which are also fairly high (78-86F at 60-80% humidity) which contributes to placing them both in the medium to medium-high difficulty to keep category. Desiccata get bigger and the pronotum are...

That looks great. As Magnus grows you can remove some of the lower decorations to give more molting room, and other than that it could last all of his youth if not his entire lifetime. I like how it came out a lot.

    Mantis with bent back

I had one Chinese who molted way too low to the ground so he bent his back. He never did start eating again (lack of desire) and died. I've heard it can be debilitating.

Definitely a little on the short side. Communal nymphs or an adult would love it though. Critter keeper tabs are annoying. You can shave the tabs off though (dremel) as nothing inside will be able to push it open. Also the vents along the lid are so big fruit flies escape with ease so you...

    Food options

Agreed. Crickets get a bad rep but it's not them, it's what they eat. Give them egg crate and feed them healthy, and they will be healthy for your mantis

Show Us Your Enclosures and Houses

I think your enclosures are great for a keeper. Lots of space, very clean, easy to interact with your pet. The first one looks like it would work well for adults or smaller communal species, the second would work for just about anything at any stage. How tall is that first one again? You...

Does anyone know anything about Acromantis gestri??

I'm not seeing the two segments there, but I am seeing what would be segment 0 (between 1 and the hind legs) I think that's a segment that needs counted. Again I'm terrible at this method so I may be off, but I'd say female - 6 segments.
