    Poor Tenuk

Poor Tenuk. Shes the Deroplatys lobata Vlodek sold me in September (or so). She did so well until her adult molt late Friday night. Both front raptors are locked open and completely useless. It's pathetic to watch her try to eat (hand fed). What a shame. I blame myself. She was in a 32 oz...

    Homemade Dry Cricket Feed

CA -- This has absolutely nothing to do with dry cricket food. But I thought it might be of interest, none the less. While buying a batch of crix at Pet Smart, here in Philadelphia, the clerk got to talking about crix feed, as he was a rep owner and occasionally used crix. He said to try...

Ootheca laid on critter keeper cover, supposed to be outside

Keith, This happens to me all the time with my Tenodera sinensis. Yes, the ooth can/should diapause in an environment that closely matches the outside conditions (unheated garage, shed, etc). If you don.t want to disturb the ooth, you can just put the cage top in another container - like a...

    Two Mantis time Commitment Questions

Although I clearly understand your reasoning for these two questions - I would never self-impose a time quota for any hobby or labor-of-love. It seems self-defeating as to why you're doing it in the first place. Placing care-quotas, in my view, makes this more of a chore, rather than a...

    Cute little visitor drops in

Guys and Girls ---- I have been a severe arachnophobic my whole life. This summer I was visited by several jumpers. Being a photographer and seeing some of the knockout images of these guys online --- I decided to capture two and learn more about them. Keep in mind they're tiny. This immature...

    Cute little visitor drops in

Is this really for ME? This cute little Phidippus audax jumping spider rode down a tether onto my desk this afternoon. Her shriveled abdomen indicated she was very hungry. So I offered her a juicy mini cricket, which she pounced on immediately. She's now plump and happy - resting on one of my...

    Quick question

I approached Ponder, a P. affinis in such a way that she thought my finger was a cricket. Took me 5 minutes to figure out how to remove her without injury to her. She certainly did draw blood.

    Eeey a real camera!

Thank you SO much for taking care to focus focus focus ! In macro, it certainly requires patience and skill, but a razor sharp result is bliss for us viewers. Remember to tell us the name (given and species) when possible. The mantis in the last two shots is clearly loves being in the spotlight.

    How often to feed Manis

The photo is a female Tenodera sinensis. She's gravid and I would feed her once every other day. She'll have no problem eating every day, if you want. I've raised a whole lot of this species (I am the T. sinensis Whisperer). Flies (Blue Bottle); crickets (make certain they're gut-loaded)...

Superb start ! Great artists, like you, have the eye for light and composition, and that's most of the battle.

    I don't know what happened?

I helped another member regarding this dilemma a few weeks ago. After some experiments it all pointed to the IE browser. But I don't know why. I've always used Firefox. It's a very good idea to have two or three different browsers at the ready on your PC.

Nothing in particular. He/she molted flawlessly on October 17. About 2.5 inches long @ L6. Gonna be a growth spurt like a teenager next two molts.

Chinese Mantis Hanging Head & More

Sorry about Zorak. :( Egg bound problems are less frequent than you might gather from the stories. Keep her misted every couple of days and feed her once a day or once every other day while she's gravid (I do once every other day).

Kat, I raise a lot of T. sinensis. This boy is at the end of his life cycle. Call a priest, rabbi or minister. Don't let him suffer. Put him in the freezer and he will be in the land of Honey and Crickets in short order.
