I know this is an old thread.. But I must say ppl claim cilnia humeralis are a very hungry bunch. And I've kept one sphodro for a couple of weeks, then she passed of old age but she was definitely a aggressive eater.

Here's a bite from my female Rhombodera valida I let her bite me so she didn't get hurt if I took her off my finger. No harm was done to the mantis, but my finger was bleeding g for a good 10 minutes! Such a strong species!

Wow... I have had a some love nibbles (taste testers).. but never a bite!... I was just discussing with someone the other day, (while watching my mantis eat) imagine if mantis were the size of a bird or cat, the damage they could make ... Thank goodness they are not big... and fit in a deli cup.

I approached Ponder, a P. affinis in such a way that she thought my finger was a cricket. Took me 5 minutes to figure out how to remove her without injury to her. She certainly did draw blood.

Of course, now that your Rhombodera valida has tasted human blood................................

Quick question... How did you remove her???? I never have had to... Guess it is a good question?...LOL

This was actually an experiment, I wanted to see how badly a shield mantis could bite ( call me crazy if you want to haha). I just let her clamp down on me and then she released. I certainly did not think she would have drawn so much blood! This bite bled for 15 mins with pressure on it! I still have a scar to this day! She was such a beautiful mantis!

I got my first bite the other day... It really blew my mind... it was an accident.. I know for sure.. it was a budwing.. and one I hold all the time.. I had just given her a little honey.. and she was wiping her mouth on me..so I thought.. then all the sudden..ouch! she bit me... I said owww.. and she immediately released.. but man.. It left a mark.. drew blood to the surface...but did not break the skin.. I will keep closer attention the next time.. lol

Awesome! The Rhombos hurt the most by far! Very gorgeous mantids though.
