    Need help verifying *** (again)

Yeah.  Despite her boyish behavior, the evidence looks female.  Maybe she's jealous because her sister has become gravid and Jet hasn't, yet. Thanks for your input.

    Need help verifying *** (again)

This is Jet.  Is it a He or a She.  Jet acts very much like a male: skittish and takes to flying (for the moment).  But this picture of her abdomen sure looks like an adult Female T. sinensis.  I'd appreciate opinions.  Thanks !  BTW:  Look at that huge ear !

    Kritter keeper for mantids

Over the years, I've had very good luck with Krit Keepers.  However - as mantisfan101 mentioned above, it's imperative you put your mantis in larger cages as they molt.  It currently am raising Tenodera Sinensis.  As they outgrow each container, they are moved to a larger container (about 3x...

    Hix Sunbathing

Alas, Sticky, I put her on a large petunia plant 2 days ago and now cannot find her.  Her green camouflage is exact to the plant, but I've rifled through the plant every which way.  No Hix.  May have lost her.  But sister Liu has remained on a neighboring Butterfly Bush for 3 weeks now.  Kind of...

    Male or Female?

So you guys see 6 segments?  The one tucked in closest to her legs and the last is the large "V" shape at her stern.

    Male or Female?

After all these years, I still have some trouble determining the *** of many mantids.  This is Photon - a healthy adult Tenodera sinensis.  Female, yes?  I look at all the diagrams and drawings and still often get confused.  Thanks for any input.

    Hiding in the petunias

Now that Hix is an adult, I took her outside to enjoy the sun in my patio petunia patch.  She took to the plants immediately.  So much more inviting than a sterile old Kritter Keeper!  The second photo is a distance shot somewhat emulating "Where's Waldo."  Where's Hix? (Not that hard).

    Hix Sunbathing

Thanks guys.  She's just molted to an adult and, luckily, kept that pretty emerald green.

    Wild caught versus cultured food

I also live in a (relatively) high density neighborhood.  Have fed wild prey (primarily moths and small butterflies when I can get 'em) without any detriment to the mantids.  Also use commercial crickets.  I make sure they are at least 2 days gut-loaded.  Regarding wild food - there's always an...

    Liu in the wild

It's been 19 days since I made this Butterfly Bush Liu's new home - and he's remained loyal to it.  We know our pets are very intelligent.  Liu has learned to navigate, all day and night, slowly and methodically to the largest flowering stems, realizing this is where the highest probability of...

    Hix Sunbathing

Hix was getting restless in her condominium, so I put her out on a porch houseplant.  As you see, she very happy to bask in the hot afternoon sun.

    Liu in the wild

This is Liu, one of four L6 Tenodera sinensis (my favorite sp.) on a butterfly bush on my deck.  I decided to let him loose (random choice).  Conditions are perfect at the moment here in southeast Pennsylvania, having turned hot and a bit more humid. To entice him to make the bush his residence...

    Farewell

@Serle  Just remember -- he's now in the Land of Crickets and Honey.  His wings are straight and he flies like an F 16.

    Traveling with mantids?

Make sure you bring your spray bottle with distilled H2O.

Abdomen flopping backward when hanging upside down

Jet - one of my Tenodera sinensis who molted 36 hours ago to L6 has the Flop.  It occasionally can prove serious, even fatal.  Only thing you can do is turn the housing upside-down (if it's small enough) and hope the mantis doesn't re-orient itself again to the "bat hang" position.  So far Jet...

    @CosbyArt

@CosbyArt You are a hero among spiders !  Was also in the hospital for a month; but never spotted an invertebrate .  I can sympathize with your valiant attempts to get said wolfie out of such an unhealthy environment as a hospital !

    Molting Issue - advice sought

@spotsy99  It's actually Photon who experienced the molt dilemma (I make mention of this for my own posting history info). She's doing extremely well, thank you and just did a successful molt yesterday to L6.  Let her rest and dry out over night and gave her 2 fat, juicy BB flies this...

    Will I EVER learn?

@spotsy99  Yes, Jet has forgotten the incident, because, since that lousy experience, she's been fed fat crickets (gut loaded on gourmet dinners) and plump, juicy house and now - blue bottle flies.  Not to mention an occasional wild-caught moth. @Ranitomeya  Thank you for that reminder...
