So this the one?!?! the 'elusive' Larger Florida mantis?

How do you know it's "impossible"? Yen has created threads of his trips to Arizona I believe, and he had pictures of carolinas with unbelievable size variation. Perhaps these abnormally large ones are at the extremes of the variation? It's certainly possible given the history of this species...

    EVERYONE PLEASE READ! stagmo/brunner confusion/justice

Ignoring all the petty arguments... Agent A, I work in the insect collection here at Cornell which has over 7 million insect specimens with somewhere near 200,000 different species. As extensive, well documented, and organized this collection is, it still has its faults and flaws (which gives...

    Mantiphobia

Now that I'm majoring in entomology, I don't get odd looks about mantids (just odd looks about the fact that I'm majoring in entomology! Haha). But before, man, the reactions were priceless. Just have patience and educate.

    Tenodera sinensis Range

And it for sure wasn't from a garden where a purchased ooth had hatched?

    Tenodera sinensis Range

I didn't really consider the use of insecticides simply because I figured an invader like T. sinensis would be more likely to resist it than the natives. I don't know enough about specific pesticides to refute what you said Ranitomeya, but if I could just play devil's advocate for a moment: my...

    Tenodera sinensis Range

I agree Likebugs. But perhaps, like you said, it's because California does have a mild winter that they can't establish. Maybe the ooths hatch too early and die off with lack of food. But with people not even reporting adult T. sinensis, it appears as if they're not even able to make it to adult...

    Tenodera sinensis Range

Thanks for the input guys, you don't know how much I appreciate it. So why do you think they're unable to become established in Florida and California? And the other states in between? Likebugs, I actually read some articles about how T. sinensis isn't in Florida, but it never explained why. I'm...

    Tenodera sinensis Range

Yeah that's consistent with the story I've been getting from people. On Buggide, out of the 9 pictures of T. sinensis in California, one was actually M. religiosa and the other 8 were released by the photographer into his garden. But it seems like wild populations have disappeared.

    Tenodera sinensis Range

Thanks for the replies guys. Ismart, I checked buggide and there is a huge gap where no pics of T. sinensis have been uploaded from. I know this doesn't necessarily mean they're not there, but I've never heard of T. sinensis occurring in anywhere besides California and the east. Ranitomeya...

    Oh my....

Wow...congrats! When you're overrun with babies, please keep me in mind :)

I think I figured out something..

In the wild, they don't have humans to comfort them after a molt. If they're "shy", then handling them will stress them out.

    Metallyticus violaceus consolidated

Congrats man! That's so awesome. I hope that you keep documenting these guys and shed more info on them. I'm really interested.

    Tenodera sinensis Range

Hi everyone, I'm looking for information regarding the range of Tenodera sinensis (or angustipennis) in North America. I'm curious because despite nurseries selling T. sinensis ooths in places like California, I'm unaware of them actually becoming established in California. If anyone has any...

Found a Chinese mantis about a month ago

I wouldn't release her, she's most likely nearing the end of her lifespan anyway. Might as well keep her until she goes. But at least you got an ooth!

Mantis eating behavior after laying eggs

It could be that mantids are naturally more defensive post laying an ooth (like how they get defensive pre molt or before laying an ooth), so it looks like the mantis is defending the ooth, but really she's not. I don't know, just a guess.

hmmm.....why do they call me an orchid mantis

Awesome picture. I think having an orchid plant should be a requirement for having this species.
