My Mantis Thinks She is a Parrot

Aw, she's so cute! I love the mantises that can hang out with you. They're so much fun. :)

    Mantis species Id?

Like the others said, that's definitely a Stagmomantis limbata. They are the only native species to show the blue lip. :)

    Youngest Member

I've been raising mantises since age four (not kidding - my parents have pictures to prove it!) I started breeding at about 10.

New Species (to Me) ever caught

Very nice! The ooths of Iris oratoria do tend to be very small, especially if unfertilized. As I'm sure you probably know, the species is partially parthenogenetic, so be sure to keep the ooth! :) She looks just like the oratoria I have right now, Klaretta. She looks very healthy - amazing...

    Fogging for humidity

Actually, I have 4 L6 ghosts right now as well as some younger ones, and one of the L6's is green. The humidity in our house is only about 15-25%. I think that humidity may make a difference, but in my experience it hasn't. Also, only the females come in green.

    Fogging for humidity

Yeah, we have really low humidity here and I never use anything like that. My ghosties are fine. For a higher-humidity species like idolos, that might be good, but your ghosts should be fine with an occasional misting.

    Hi...noob from CT

Hi, didn't see this until just now. Glad to hear that your two mantids are easily catching their flies now. It's a lot easier when they start eating flies. Fruit flies are a nuisance... :) ~Wolfie

    She just threw up! :(

The pulsing abdomen is just her breathing. Don't worry about that. If she continues to vomit, I would try another food source. The crickets were probably the source of the problem. She looks pretty old in the picture, though, so she's probably nearing the end of her life too. :( 64...

    Pink Stagmomantis californica

Yeah, I'd say that's a limbata! :) I've had several with that color scheme. Let me go grab a pic. Edit: Here are pictures of two of mine that had that color - both limbatas. It's my favorite color of all in a limbata. ~Wolfie

    She just threw up! :(

Sound like she could have eaten a bad cricket. She's also probably getting pretty old, but old age alone shouldn't cause throwing up. How long do you keep the crickets before feeding them to her, and what do you feed them while you have them?

My Praying Mantis laid an ooth on the curtains

I'd give a bit more time to make sure that it is hardened, then just peel it off. Or cut a hole and no one will notice.
