    Mantids not eating!

maybe you are misting them too much and its too damp. This could encourage infections if excess dampness is not dried off by a heat lamp or something. They come from southern europe, where it is very dry and hot. So they don't need much water, getting just about all they require from their food...

    Mantis Vs. Assassins !!!

that doesn't sound very fair! the assasin bugs ive seen look quite bulky fellas compared to the, to be honest, rather 'stick insect' build of the typical mantis. A bit of a weight advantage going on there! To be more fair on the mantis I would have to choose one twice the length of the assasin...

    Mantis Vs. Assassins !!!

I don't know for sure as i've not kept 'em but assasin bugs probably don't hunt by eyesight like mantids but 'feel' around for a victim using their antenna more. I'm totally guessing this however, they may have brilliant eyesight!! so the mantis could grab the assasin bug before the bug knew it...

    New tank ideas?

its looks like a big cage for one mantis so why not get a small group of Gongylus Gongloides if you can find any. these are not cannibalistic, apparently! anyone know of any others?

    Who says Bees/wasps are dangerous?

not sure if this is relevant but its worth mentioning here. be warned i once bought a beautiful adult budwing mantis and was stupid enough to feed it a big adult house spider. the spider sunk its fangs into one of its front legs, paralizing that arm so it was limp and useless. saying that, i...

    your pick?

I stand corrected... however, 10 x 35 = 350 young per female = still alot of mantids

    your pick?

hey thats a big future colony you got planned there, sheldon. - if you can get, say 300 out of each ooth and each female lays 2 or 3 ooths! i think you gonna need a bigger cage

    your pick?

i only feed bluebottles to my mantids and they seem to really like them. (I cant be bothered to rear crickets). Its cool when they grab them as they fly past; i'm not sure if all mantids are quick enough as ive not kept many types but Gongys are well known for doing this. Idolomantis are pretty...

small mantis - big prey. good or bad?

hi I have just fed my new L2 or L3 H grandii on a medium sized bluebottle. I thought it would run away but to say it grabbed it with enthusiasm is an understatement, it was a huge battle with the fly pulling the little mantis all over the place, but the little guy hung on and eventually won. It...

    male or female

probably the best thing to do before buying mantids, is to ask seller if they can supply at both genders or the particular one you need and if they say they won't or can't *** them then assume you will get all one ***, probably males, and shop elsewhere. I dont think its an unreasonable request...

    male or female

so proven, its pretty easy to *** even small mantids then, right. all you need is a reasonable digital camera which most people have these days. why do sellers say they cant *** them. if im spending over £20 i want the choice of male or female, not gamble on getting one in a group of five or...

    male or female

hi just bought a number of h. grandis nymphs which are probably L3. They are all the same and look a bit like this underneith. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v11/macu...a/underside.jpg could someone please confirm its gender. If its what I think it is, is there anyone selling h grandis in...

    heat packs?

I had a look at that link. it says they keep warm for 24 hours. with the speed of uk mail, would that be enough :?

    heat packs?

    thanks.

    heat packs?

when buying mantids in winter, breeders sometimes mention heat pads or similar. what are these, where do you get 'em and do they actually keep the critters alive during postage? cheers
