when buying mantids in winter, breeders sometimes mention heat pads or similar.

what are these, where do you get 'em and do they actually keep the critters alive during postage? cheers

Heat "packs" never seen one but the are a small "pack" that i assume has a pouch of one chemical inside that you bust so it can mix this will then provide heat for however long that particular pack lasts

i have heard one drawback is that the process takes oxygen so can be bad but if really cold then they may need it

here is a supplier in uk

scroll about nine items down

Heat packs £1.29 each or 10 for £9.99 and 50 for £47.00These are small packs that once opened start to produce a gentle heat and stay warm for up to 24 hours.

Ideal for keeping animals warm during transit and as an emergency heat source during a power failure

I had a look at that link. it says they keep warm for 24 hours. with the speed of uk mail, would that be enough :?

hi Nympho,

if you are sending it overseas or long distance, it is best to get an insulated box (stylofoam). when the parcel is packed properly, the heat should stay in the box for long time, mantis is more likely to die due to mismolting or poor packaging/container.

nymph depends where your sending

most people use the next day guaranteed delivery to send mantids so for example give to post office 4:00pm on a day arrives with new owner 10:00 next morning = 18hours

so depends how far it has to go and which postage method u use
