Ahh yea, and wahlbergii as well. That is what I figured the coronatus would do before I saw it for myself. But this is totally different. When those others do it, its just a tap, and often doesnt even seem deliberate. This is pretty loud... and they do it every 45 seconds or so for 5-10...

I used to think it was some sort of mating dance or something too, but now I have noticed many mantid species doing it at all different stages of life (Even L1 !) Would be nice to know why they do it. It is pretty funny though.

As Yen said, try tweezers. Lobster roaches have a pretty strong grip, especially if they are on netting or aluminum mesh. Mantids have a tough time pulling them off the ground, so the roaches tend to drag them around. I use tweezers so the matid can get a grip on the roach off the ground...

I use a method similar to nedweenie's, minus the cooling. I tap a good amount of flies into an empty 32oz container, and then use that container for feeding all of my mantids. No cooling down required. A tap or 2 on the container knocks all of the flies to the bottom, and then I open it up...

I agree with Jesse as well, it is I. oratoria. You can tell by the light colored line on the wing, as well as the lack of dots on the wings that the stagmo's have. And I want the camera used to take that pic.

Looks like you have yourself a male lineola or centralis. I would guess sub sub-adult. The wing buds are still pretty small, although it is a tough call for the first 10 days after it sheds. I guess we will find out for sure in a month!

That all depends on the male. Some will mate a few hours afterwards, and some may take days. Just feed him a bit and introduce him to the female in a day and check his mood. Mornings are often the best time.

To address the make or buy part, I usually buy a culture of the type of ff's I want to use, and then make more cultures using the purchased ones. There are a few different variations, but I prefer the flightless/wingless variety, as well as the hydei (the bigger species of fruitfly). As for...
