    Arizona trip 2015

The big green grasshopper is a plains lubber.

    Eyes turned black

Their eyes turn black at night. Helps them see in the dark, sort of the mantis equivalent of rods and cones. Put her in a well lit room and you might be able to see them turn green again within minutes.

    New backdoor visitor (wolf spider(?))

Hmm... Dolomedes carry their egg sacs like wolf spiders. Definitely a fishing spider though. This spring I found a large female nursery web spider, put her in a small kritter keeper with some leaves and she did something very similar and made an eggsac. When the babies hatched i put it outside...

    Mystery Mantis Log

Cool little guys. I think mantises that run around fast are shaped a little more flat and 'cockroachy' than the typical mantis are neat.

    New backdoor visitor (wolf spider(?))

These things are great. They eat fish!

Mantid face ripped in the old shed skin?

    Yikes that's gruesome.

    culturing of Phorid flies

I don't think that the phorid flies that infest drains are necessarily the same species that feed on roach corpses.

Stick insects as good praying mantis feeders?

I don't recommend dubias. In addition to what cosbyart said, the nymphs are very inactive. Their preferred defense mechanism is playing dead and they tend to sit still at the bottom of the cage and not move for hours at a time. Their wide, rounded shape and hard exoskeleton makes them very...

Black fluid in thorax, clogged mouth

Yup. If she can eat that I'll bet she can eat a freshly molted roach too.

Black fluid in thorax, clogged mouth

She did this to a field cricket nymph! I guess I've been underestimating her. :) http://s1303.photobucket.com/user/salmonsaladsandwic/media/image.jpg1_zpsuiy0uget.jpg.html?o=0 Perhaps the fuzz is why she couldn't handle a moth.

Photo experiment of insect incouner & culture

The first one is a wasp mimicking cerambycid beetle of some sort.

Slim fly with a sting? Help

Parasitic Braconid wasp. The "sting" is an extended ovipositor used to lay eggs inside of other insects, especially caterpillars and grubs.

    Found a hatchling snapper :D

What are you going to do if he doesn't seem strong enough? Try keeping him as a pet till he weighs 40 pounds? Until he grows to the size of a truck and eats you and your neighbors?

    My ghost mantis fell!

I doubt it. Only the very largest insects weigh enough for falling to harm them. I think it's possible that that was some sort of defense mechanism, since they look like dead leaves dropping to the ground and staying still would make it very difficult for a predator to find them. Although I've...

    Robber Fly!!!

Yeah I think you should just release it. However I think it would be possible to keep robber flies in a screen cage. Three sides could be covered with dark paper and the fourth facing away from windows or other light sources, with a lightbulb hanging directly above as the "sun". They might...

    Moth looks poisonous but isnt?

Flies, bees (if you're worried about the stinger then you can learn to recognize drones and feed them only), small dragonflies etc. I don't think all moths are bad. Noctuid moths and sphingid moths live a long time and feed on nectar frequently and are probably better than ones that don't feed.

    Moth looks poisonous but isnt?

No, many moth species are totally harmless. If a moth does have cyanide in its wings than there's probably a whole lot more cyanide in its body. I don't think moths are very nutritious. Many species feed little or not at all as adults and survive on fat stored as a caterpillar. That means...

    Robber Fly!!!

I don't think it would make a very good captive. It would probably spend most of it's time flying into the walls of it's container and food you offer would just panic it. Probably similar to trying to keep a dragonfly. Robber flies are awesome though.

Never make assumptions on what something may be.

Huh I didn't read this carefully and thought there was only one! I think you're right about not having as many parasitoids, as you found six and none of them have any cocoons on their backs. Although I wouldn't be surprised if some of them nevertheless do turn out to be parasitized... There's...

Black fluid in thorax, clogged mouth

I gave her a nice fat cobweb spider and she managed to pierce the abdomen and eat it's contents by herself.
