Is there any way to save this?

Tape and mantises don't mix well. I don't think eating would be your worst problem, mantises just get entangled in tape all the time, in the most impossible ways. And tape somehow loves mantises, it's impossible to get them back out without harming the mantis.

Can I put hydrogen peroxide on black eye?

I've heard honey has antifungal properties? At least honey wouldn't hurt the mantis if it didn't work, he'd just get a nice sweet treat! lol I wouldn't try hydrogen peroxide. I'm pretty sure it will be super hard to apply and if the mantis accidentally drinks some of it... i wouldn't think...

Help! Is my ghost doomed? :(

The leg will regrow. He/she/it will be fine. As long as a mantis can hang upside down on its own without falling, it will be able to molt again and in my experience it doesn't matter which legs are lost. I've had nymphs missing two back legs, missing both right side legs, missing both front...

    Dying M. caffra?

Hmm is that the male that I sent? If I remember correctly he's about 2 weeks old so old age isn't the issue here. Did you get a chance to get the female mated? If not I'll see what I can do about sending another male or at least getting you a fertile ooth. Though my males have been way more...

    New mantises!

My cats are a nightmare.. and I can't keep them out of the mantis room no matter how hard I try. They slip past me the second I open the door! I've had a lot of luck introducing the male right behind the female for M. Caffra btw. If he fails to notice her or just freaks out after about 10...

Fly Maggots in my FF Cultures

Is it the actual maggots that smell bad? I thought the only bad smelling part was the decaying meat associated with *getting them into the mood*. I've heard of some breeders who managed to come up with a "free-of-decaying-meat-smell" formula that works and they're the same deal as fruitflies...

    New mantises!

Oh the M. Caffra males love to flutter around. Lovely pictures ^^ One day I will finally invest in a camera too hehe

    Deroplatys lobata, L2 - L6 photos

I still have mine on hydei cause I've been having a serious BBF shortage. My larger mantises have been gobbling them up faster than I can re-order lol, they should speed up after I switch them. I'm saving on my electricity bill so no heating unless strictly required, though the hot end of the...

Giant dead leaf 2/3rd Instar not eating?

I can't comment on the species in general, but mine are all very passive when it comes to food. In fact when I drop a bunch of Hydei in their cups, I will only rarely see one or two actually catch one right then and there. I really like their passiveness :P Means that they don't eat each...

Where Do You Get Your Mesh?

Amazon, fiberglass or aluminum mesh. Aluminum mesh is entirely chew-proof even from roaches but a pain to work with. Haven't had trouble with fiberglass mesh and chewing yet. Most mantises have a good grip on it too, some species with a weak grip will need some sticks glued onto the fiberglass mesh.

I must be really underfeeding mine... They are still L3/L4 lol! Great job raising them ^^

Giant dead leaf 2/3rd Instar not eating?

The D. Lobata I have from L1-L4 are all very passive when it comes to food. I feed them once every 3 days. She should be fine unless she keeps this behavior up for the entire week. Adding some leaves and sticks to the enclosure might help take away some stress for them as well. Are their...

    Black on eye?

It really sucks, I wish we knew more about diseases (especially transmittable ones) when it comes to mantises. There are days when multiple nymphs drop and you can't help but wonder if there's a flu going around.

    Strange Deroplatys lobata molt

Good that you caught it in time! Sometimes mantises fall while preparing to molt and are too lethargic to make their way back up resulting in death. Your little guy owes his life to you ^^

    Black on eye?

Mantises can regenerate parts of their eye as long as some it is still remaining. Might want to quarantine the individuals with black eyes just in case it is something fungal or bacterial. Sorry about the loss.

    Beginner Mantis Instructable

Hmm ok. I joined IBC (International Betta Congress), and the group refrained me from asking which transshipper (person who handles imports) they had good experiences with, since a similar question was asked before and there was a lot of trouble involving lawsuits and such. I was really surprised...

    Beginner Mantis Instructable

Just glanced at it, will take a closer look later when I have time. I would definitely re-read over it and fix some grammar. Like in the second paragraph it should be 'can be raised'. Also in guide's such as these I usually like to see an overview at the very beginning, sort of like an...

My Rhombodera is always threatening people.

O.o how interesting. I know some of mine have a small circle missing just like that (but really small), I figure it was their way of truly imitating leaves (since leaves do not look perfect in the wild and may have some bit damage from bugs etc.). Could I see the shield from the top? I'm...

    Sick Creo?

Pictures would definitely help. It's not unusual for creobroter to have pink eyes, though if there is a difference between the two eyes, it usually points to a problem. Most of my males and females do have pink eyes and have been breeding and laying fertile oothecas which hatched. When breeding...
