  1. Hypoponera

Lets see the face behind the username!

Hey Rick, I knew you were in the Army, but didn't know you were para! Very cool! What unit were you in? Did you ever get assigned to Vicenza Italy? We had 2 battalions of paras there. Did you ever get to jump in Germany?

    US Species List

I think your list is pretty complete. Maybe a handful of sub-species or geographic varieties could be added, but those would be of questionable value.
  3. Hypoponera

    Centrobolus splendidus

Cool! I'll keep an eye on Bugsincyberspace for some.
  4. Hypoponera

    Centrobolus splendidus

Both are very cool looking! How large do they get? Orin, you mentioned that the one species is in the US. Are they available yet?
  5. Hypoponera

    North American Phasmids

How hard getting said permit would be depends on your state. I was told by Ismart that NY state does not even allow the keeping of walking sticks native to the state. Other states may not have any rules against importing captive breed exotics. Just depends where your state stands. The truely...

    Millipede ID

So Rebecca, does that mean your first in line for eggs? GreenOasis, I did actually look at Bugsincyberspace. But none of those are quite right. But good suggestion none the less!
  7. Hypoponera

    North American Phasmids

I'd like to see the section opened up as well! I am not a "die-hard" phasmid person, but still keep some and collect natives every year. I would love to get together with other Yanks to trade for species not found in New Mexico.
  8. Hypoponera

    Millipede ID

Can anyone identify this millipede? I have two of them. I had gotten only a single, unidentified specimen from Orin a long while ago, but have found a second in the tank. The larger one is shown. It is about 6 inches long with the smaller specimen being about 4 inches. I think they are in the...
  9. Hypoponera

    Albino Narceus

Very cool! Do you still have these critters? Did you have any trouble with them over a long period of time?

Couple of collecting trips on October

I think that fuzzy mantis is Bactromantis mexicana. Oligonicella scudderi has the rear portion of the pronotum equally long as the front part. Though Helfer shows B. mexicana only being found in the US in Arizona, not in Texas. I will have to pencil in that! I think that walking stick is...

ID this if there is a name for it yet?

OK, I found your posting in the breeder section. He goes by the handle "Mantisdeperu" and as far as I know, he is banned from selling on this forum. He lives in Peru and so does have access to some really cool species. He has posted photos of some other cool species in the photo section. Do a...

ID this if there is a name for it yet?

Looks like some kind of unicorn mantid, probably Pseudovates sp or Phylovates sp. But definately not an Arizona or Texas unicorn. You can see the "horn" in several of the photos. The ooth in the photo looks much like a unicorn ooth as well. Any clue where this critter originally came from...
  13. Hypoponera

New species from Africa please help me

The "bubble" ooth looks to be Holocorypha sp. I do not know the exact species though.

    carolina mantis cold tolerance

We had quite a few in Valpo. Chinese mantids seemed more common, or at least more easily spotted.

    Frey - (Poland)

I just recieved a package from Frey! I asked for 15 nymphs and had 13 L1s arrived in perfect condition. Not too shabby considering the package travelled from Poland to New Mexico. And FAST! It took only 5 days to reach me. Heck, it takes stuff close to 15 days to reach me from Canada and 3 days...

    ((( WILD FLORIDA MANTIDS )))

can you send or post photos of this species: Smaller Florida Mantid (Stagmomantis vicina) - $20 I have never heard of S. vicina before!

    Education opportunities?

Yes, "Hypoponera" is an ant genus. All relatively small and non-descript until you see them under a scope. I always found them in ground mounted termite bait stations. Here is a link on the genus: http://www.antweb.org/description.do?name=hypoponera&rank=genus&project=worldants
  18. Hypoponera

    Education opportunities?

Hey Phil, I just spent the last 2 days looking for the meaning/breakdown of the name "Hypoponera". Alas, all I've come up with is info on the genus. I never did learn the meanings of most of the names I had to memorize. Learning the meanings might have made the memorizing a bit easier! Yep...

Collecting experience in Texas and Arizona during early May

Hey wait a second! How about sending one or two of those leaf cutter queens my way!! Guess our next meet up will have me going to Houston rather then Tucson.

    Education opportunities?

There are a number of groups who do "buggy-type" research. But most of those are for after grad school. Pre-grad school and you are very limited in what you can do. The Univ of Arizona has a good grad level Entomology dept as does Purdue. There are some good depts in a couple CA schools as...
