The ootheca from Tucson hatched! About a dozen yesterday, and five overnight. We've had some warm weather lately, which probably explains the early hatch.
Congrats! You should wait at least 24 hours for the foam to harden, and the you can transfer the egg case to a different container so feeder insects don't chew on it.
The lid has a small ventilation hole, I'm using a 3.5 inch deli cup. I actually leave the top off for parts of the day, so he can have open air. Thanks for the tip on the paper towel!
I recently caught an l4 or l5 L. minor, and I'm not sure about the care requirements. It's been eating well, but does the cage need a shedding surface? Or can it molt on the paper towel? Here is a pic of the setup. Thanks!
I tend to look on bushes that are about a foot above the ground. When I was in India, I found bark mantids by waving my hand over the tree trunks and getting them to move. The main things I look for are symmetry and movement.
