    Hestiasula's gigantic ooth

Thanks! Fingers crossed. Her 3rd ooth was laid 3/4, so counting 46 days would lead to approximately 4/19. So far, the 9 babies are eating and getting fat, and doing their hand-waving whenever I approach. The mother has eaten a bunch of flies and half a super worm, looks like she's preparing for...

Giant Dead Leaf Mantis, DEROPLATYS DESICCATA

Beautiful threat display! I love the white and black markings on their inner arms.

    Alexander's Mantids: 2012 - Present

It's fun reading about Lord Ess - it is pretty amazing how large some male T. sinensis can be! Last summer, I had a CB adult female T. sinensis, which was barely more than 3 inches long for some odd reason. While taking a walk in a local park, I kept an eye out for any males. To my surprise, I...

    Hestiasula's gigantic ooth

The female's 4th ooth, laid last week: Second photo is of the babies. Interestingly, they seem to "communicate" with each other - when one nymph approaches another, it will do its hand-waving, and the other nymph will sometimes respond in a similar way.

    Orchid ooth okay?

More recent picture, taken at the end of March: Top: Mated female's 2nd ooth, laid March 6th, same ooth from the above picture Bottom: That same female's 3rd ooth, laid March 25th I don't know if there's a relationship between ooth color and viability. Maybe there was a connection between...

    Orchid ooth okay?

I don't know if it helps, here is a pic of my orchid ooths: Going from top to bottom in the photo: 1) My mated female's 2nd ooth, laid March 6th. Today, it is still roughly the same color, hasn't turned dark yet, will expect a hatch in mid-late April (well, if it hatches). 2) Same mated...

    Hestiasula's gigantic ooth

The aforementioned ooth hatched 3 more nymphs the second day, for a total of 10 nymphs. One nymph died within 24 hours for no apparent reason. I hope the rest make it... :) CosbyArt, I think the low humidity must've been the culprit. I've had serious delays with all the ooths I've been...

    Spiny Flower mantis Copulation-Readiness?

I mated mine when the males had been 4 weeks as adult and the females were around 4-5 weeks. I tried earlier at around 3 weeks but the males showed no interest and the females were extremely aggressive.

    Help ID-ing Ooths from Ebay

The same thing happened to me. Back in late 2013, when I started to seriously raise mantids, I bought pack of 3 ooths from ebay: T. sinensis, S. carolina, and M. religiosa. The so called "carolina" ooth looks exactly like the pictures in the first post. At that time, I had no idea they weren't...

URGENT HELP NEEDED: Ghost Mantis just molted to sub and one of her raptoral arms isnt working

Hi there, sorry to hear about the mismolt, it happens to everyone, and fortunately, it doesn't sound too bad. So one of her raptorials isn't working, but the other one is working fine, right? I've had mantises that were able to catch food with only one arm. You said she is not climbing, which...

    Hestiasula's gigantic ooth

Well, her first ooth didn't hatch. :( maybe it was too dry or something. Her 2nd ooth, laid on February 16th, hatched today, 46 days later! Only 7 nymphs though. Very tiny and cute, and they already know how to do their signature "arm-waving." I had pretty much given up hope on that ooth, so I...

    Broken limbs and black mouth?

oops! I misread. Somehow I thought the mantis that died was another mantis and the one in the picture was your current mantis, haha. Anyways, sounds like she lived a good long life and you took good care of her. It's always sad when mantises pass.

    pseudocreo mating

My hatches ranged from 15 to 70+. And some of the ooths, especially the earlier ones, did not hatch at all. I kept them at 40% humidity, 75F, ~2 months of incubation, which seems longer than normal.

    P. wahlbergii - Mated, but ooth did not hatch

Update - the ooth in the picture never hatched, nor did a couple others. Subsequent ooths hatched, however, all very delayed for some reason. Today, had a 70+ hatch from the 3rd ooth laid by the same female that laid the dud ooth shown above. I also tried candling the ooths - I did that about...

    Feeding a Crippled Mantis

I have to feed one of my special mantises for the rest of her life, and she is only pre-sub. Two molts ago, her head and raptorials were stuck in the old skin, and her body was bent 180 degrees. Normally this would've been a fatal mismolt. I figured I got nothing to lose, if I didn't do...

    Sally's mantis thread start 05/13

Congrats with the hatches! How many Phyllothelys hatched? I heard that hatch rates for this species is kind of low? And glad to see your Hestiasula ooth hatched! Mine mated and her first ooth hasn't hatched in 1.5 months. Not sure what happened there, maybe the mating wasn't successful. :(

    S. pretiosa (cryptic mantis) food

I started them off with D. melanogaster, and then D. hydei. Around pre-sub/sub, they could tackle houseflies, and as adults, they readily ate blue bottles. I never tried giving them any crawling prey because I didn't want to risk it. :)

    Idolo female :-D

Yeah, seems like idolos love to stay at the subadult stage for a long time. I read it happens with females, but I didn't expect my males are doing the same thing. :( And yes, it's a joker mantis in my pic. He turned sub last week and my females are still presub and sub. Good luck with...
