    Striking and missing

I've seen my share of misstrikes. On the other hand, I have yet to see a mantis drink anything. I suspect they get their hydration from their food. Give it a few days. Most likely, things will turn around.

This Hasn't Happened in 17 Years

Thanks. That explains it. I'm curious what this year's broods will sound like. The 2021 brood sounded like a martian spaceship or something. Not at all like the annual variety.

This Hasn't Happened in 17 Years

Does anyone understand the timing of these emergences? It seems to me we had an emergence fairly recently. 2021, I think? Apparently two different Brood X species will coincide this summer. But they can't be the same species as we had in 2021, because it's been neither 13 nor 17 years since...

    Fruit Flies

I may end up getting some flies from you in the future Rebecca. Roaches are working for me, but I'm not sure they're the ideal choice. You've got to be real careful not to create little nooks and crannies where the roaches can stay out of reach of the mantises. Like between the inside wall of...

    Molting

I think a pooter is the only way to control small quantities. I've been using a regular plastic straw with some mesh (panty hose) rubber-banded over the mouth side.

    Molting

It never occurred to me to time the reintroduction of feeders. I figure mantises will eat when they're good and ready. That's how it works in nature.

    Fruit Flies

I went from fruit flies to Shelfordella lateralis nymphs. I already had them.

    Molting

I must have missed that. Mine are about 3rd instar now, and I have yet to see them drink.

    Molting

I've never actually seen one drink. I wonder if the whole drinking thing has been overstated, and they actually get their hydration from prey items.

    Molting

I've never monitored humidity. I've got a piece of paper towel inside the deli cup, which I saturate with water periodically. Sometimes twice a day.

    Molting

I kept all my newborn Chinese mantis nymphs in the same container for quite some time. I'm sure there were significant die offs, but I started out with way more than I needed. It's as if two little nymphs merge into one nymph that's twice as big. A worthwhile tradeoff.

    Fertile Ootheca?

I ordered some fertile Chinese mantis ooths on Amazon recently, and they were quite a bit smaller than an inch and a half.

    Chatting with AI about mantids.

I heard some AI generated pop songs. They were better than Taylor Swift. Granted, that's setting the bar pretty low.

We're pretty much the only show in town aren't we? I mean forum-wise.

    Seems pretty accurate.

How I make fruit fly medium!

I like the mesh over the medium idea. Do you know what the yeast is actually for? Is that a bacterial inhibitor?

How I make fruit fly medium!

I want to get off the Repashy SuperFly, so I've been trying my homegrown mashed potato flakes and powdered sugar recipe. I add a pinch of mold inhibitor and yeast. So far, the melanogaster seem to like it. I'm keeping the hydei on SuperFly. I hear they're more finicky.

let's start a thread of mundane occurrences!

Funny. Why do I doubt that you even knew about it? Anyway, who's harping? I would say that fellow on FB is informing.

let's start a thread of mundane occurrences!

Just thought I'd document the full text here for the collar. Forums are better for archiving. Who knows if I'll ever find it again on FB. This is Andrea Mercado's idea. I asked him why the method is only suitable for larger species. I haven't heard back yet. "Wanted to share a new breeding...
