leaving for a trip, will my mantis be okay without food for 10ish days?

Craig, I think the suggestion is that maggots are nutritious, but since they burn a lot of energy turning into flies, you first have to feed the flies before they regain their nutritional content. On an unrelated note, Acheta domesticus scored higher than I thought it would.

Alright Alex. You've turned me around. I got the impression Wolven was shooting from the hip a little. If you're leaving for a trip and you've got no other option, I figured newly emerged flies are still better than no flies.

Those flies are plenty nutritious. They've been eating for their entire larval life.

I've seen frog folks leave a whole FF culture (with the top off) in the frog tank, while they're away.

    Let see your setups!

It's beneficial to have a room that has a separate climate altogether. I have yet to set that up.

Possibly stupid question for keepers of beetles

I once saw a bumper sticker I could relate to. It said, "Not for love nor money will I leave the house."

    Micro-cultural research for this forum!

...............or why vanity beats self-fullfilment every time.

Possibly stupid question for keepers of beetles

Simple critters generally only exert themselves for a reason, like finding food or a mate. Some are programmed to migrate to warmer climates. If their needs are met, I'm inclined to think they'd rather not do much of anything.

    waxworm culture video up!

Yeah. Alex aged a whole three days since the roach video. ;)

    Insect brains

That's probably part of the appeal of mantises. The fact that they seem kind of human. It's weird how the moth brain is able to get "rewired" to the body, once it's been moved to the abdomen. They must have fairly primitive physiology compared to mammals, for instance.

    Insect brains

Cool. Years ago I posted an experiment I saw on transplanting moth brains: https://mantidforum.net/threads/transplanting-heads.29338/page-2#post-240662

    My Green anoles

Do we have any UVB savvy people on the message board? How would Amazon's Choice be? Some folks think that those little curly compact fluorescents are not as efficient as the more traditional linear fluorescents.

had to have high high heat!

As a kid, a teacher requested a hearing test for me. It turned out my hearing was fine. I was just tuning her out.

had to have high high heat!

Yeah, but my reading comprehension was already bad when I was a kid born in D.C. :D No wonder politicians are so inept.

had to have high high heat!

That's quite possible. Reading comprehension is not my strong suit.

had to have high high heat!

I'm using side heat with my tarantulas. To get a substrate temperature of 80F, I had to set the heat tape to about 88F. Since you're using bottom heat, your setup might make more efficient use of the heat tape.

had to have high high heat!

In my experience, you'll need to set the tape to at least 95, to get the inside of the enclosure to 90.

let's start a thread of mundane occurrences!

I couldn't help but notice the green anoles as I was purusing the Rainbow Mealworms website. I've always wanted to keep some of those. Plain old Florida anoles. Back in the late '60s, they used to sell them on little leashes here at the Ohio State Fair. I'm sure they died by the hundreds...
