    Mantid eating dirt?

Just tonight I had one of my mantids go after a moth but grabbed a wood chip and she nibbled on it for about 3 seconds before she realized the moth was still flying around her enclosure. I guess she got her fiber in for the day. :P

I agree with the others. Ghost nymphs look more like black ants.

How to prepare the mantids before breeding

Well there are some mantid species that have only wing buds as an adult (i.e. Budwing Mantis). Maybe thats what the other site was talking about?

    Oddly still and changing color

I dont know about the sunlight but the fresh air could have helped. Then again it may have just been the passing of time. I did have a chinese mantis who seemed to have a leg stuck up after a molt kind of like it was froze mid-step, however after a day or so the leg seemed fine.

    Two at once

Yeah Ive seen some of my chinese catch and eat two grasshoppers at once. What I really want to see is a mantis with prey between all three pairs of legs and one in its maw. :P

How to prepare the mantids before breeding

Like angelofdeathzz said they both MUST be adults other wise yes, they will likely eat eachother. Once they are adults feed your female...a lot, and make sure your male has room to excape after they finish doing their thing.

    Sphodromantis sp. Blue Flash Handling

I just got some Blue Flash mantids yesterday and this is my first time raising these cool little guys. I enjoy handling my mantis "pets" and usualy do so by grabing whatever it is they are perched on, then placing my hand at an angle (to create an upward ramp) in front of them and most of the...

    Oddly still and changing color

Its fairly common for a mantid to change color after a molt. I have had Chinese mantids change from green to yellow and from orange to brown. I have also had a Carolina mantis change from green to gray and a ghost mantis that changed from brown to green.

    Hyperactive flower mantis

I was reading in Keeping Aliens that when your mantids are running around a lot like yours is that it can help to let them out of their cage for a bit. Maybe you can try letting it out for an hour or so every day.

    Praying Mantids Keeping Aliens

I recieved this book in the mail today. I really wasnt expecting to learn anything new from it but thought it would be nice to have mantid rearing information that was easy to access and didnt require taking the time to search the internet. Part of me also felt that since this is the book on...

    GreenOasis

I ordered a pair of mantids from Carey and got them in the mail today. This was the first time I ever ordered anything live over the internet and I have to admit I was a little nervous but Carey went above and beyond to answer all of my questions and everything went very smoothly. The mantids...

Great Book on Insects & Spiders of North America

Im not with my book right now but Ill check shortly. I have noticed that a lot of the more uncommon insects are not listed, however this field guide has a handy list in the back of endangered and threatened species.

    Hyperactive flower mantis

Agreed. An hour or two can be more than enough time to kill some animals when left in a car in the summer heat and while I realize we are talking about a mantis enclosure and not a car its the same thing really. Heat builds up quickly inside any kind of glass or plastic enclosure, thats why...
