    GreenOasis

I've been too preoccupied with my mantises that I almost forgot to leave Carey some feedback. I picked up a sexed pair of L5/L6 Sphodromantis Spec from Carey. Shipping was fast and reliable. Packaging is representative of the quality of Carey as a breeder. She adds styrofoam along the sides of...

Living close by, I picked up an L4/L5 green female Sphodromantis Spec from him today. Scott's a quality breeder who tries his best to offer you exactly what you are looking for. I asked him for his largest and greenest blue flash female and he gave me one with those qualities as well as an...

    Food too small?

Thanks for the encouraging words of wisdom Carey. I'm thinking she'll eat when she wants to eat. I think you were right about the misting. Maybe I overmisted and she's been rubbing her face too much. Gotta lay back on that.

    Food too small?

Hey everyone. Thanks for the replies and offering some feedback. I was in denial at first since this is my first mantis I've bought, but I think PhilinYuma is correct. My Sphodro Spec has some unusual discoloration on both of its eyes near the front. Sometimes when I look at the head at...

    Food too small?

So I've been testing some foods with the female mantis. I've come to some conclusions. The house flies are too small or too insignificant for a subadult female, that she simply ignores them, but thankfully she's not blind! I caught a skipper out in the backyard and the female spotted it and...

    Food too small?

Wow talk about research. So I've been actually trying different types of prey like moths and bought crickets today which she is definitely responding to. She sees them walking on the ground even though she's on the ceiling. I'm just wondering why she's waiting for them to literally be in...

    Food too small?

Is it possible for a blue bottle fly to be too small for a subadult Sphodromantis? My female literally waits for ever to strike at blue bottle flies and sometimes doesn't even catch their movements when they are right infront of her. She's not full nor is she blind (I hope not) but she seems a...

    Purchase Preference: Nymphs vs. Adults

I prefer to start with nymphs around L3/L4 since they are a bit more hardy than newly hatched nymphs. There's something exciting about watching a mantis grow bigger through each successive molt. I'm always thrilled when I compare the size difference between the stages. Adults are nice too...

    Sphodromantis Sp. Pair

Got these mantises from Carey. They've both molted once since I've got them. I'm assuming they are subadult now so one more molt until the finish line. Here are some pics. Subadult Male Female before molt Subadult Female The female went from brown to beige. I'm liking the new shade.

    Last molt for Chinese mantis?

If her wings extend the length of her abdomen, assuming she molted properly and her wings inflated, then yes that is her last molt. I can't wait until my Sphodros reach their last molt. No more worrying about decor getting in the way or humidity. You just feed them.

    Small Informational Request

Hey forum, Just had a small favor I wanted to ask ... anyone spare 50,000 orchid nymphs? Ok I'm just kidding. I think that probably give me my first migraine. But on the serious side, I wanted to ask if anyone had a picture of a subadult female sphodromantis sp preferably with some features...

    Wild caught house flies

I currently have had a green bottle fly infestation in my house. I've resisted the tempting urge to vacuum all of them up and manually caught all of around 10 flies. My Sphodros are quite happy and munching away. I don't think it's a problem. Now how do I catch those super big bluebottles...

    Mantis sitting on the ground

Maybe they are looking for some ground crawling crickets instead of flies?

    For all the mantis lovers

I'm glad you guys enjoyed it. I always thought that adult females would rarely ever jump or fly, but apparently if they really need to get somewhere out of reach, they will. Funny story Rick although I hope the kid doesn't go smashing every mantis he sees. If you slow down the video or pause...

    Chinese Mantises at Temple

Based upon what I've read, it seems that humidity, temperature, environment, and even sunlight may affect the color of mantises. It makes sense that in highly humid and hot areas with lots of sunlight that tropical and green plants would be thriving and thus the mantis would adapt a green...

    I lost my Abby today

I'm sorry to hear that. I'm sure Abby had a wonderful life and you can only hope she's left with those memories. I hope you feel better soon.

    Fly With Live Maggots Inside?

I would concur that they are maggots too. A mouse or rat died in my garage recently and these huge flesh flies started appearing all over the place. Upon smashing them I found plenty of little maggots in the corpses. I've feed these super fat flies to my mantises before. What gets irritating is...

    Chinese Mantis Eating Cicada

I was browsing Google images looking for some pictures of Chinese mantises next to a ruler to get an idea of the size of the mantis and I came across this Flickr photostream of a photographer who takes some really great shots of insect wildlife, particularly praying mantises. Browsing through I...

    Chinese Mantises at Temple

Back when I visited Taiwan, I visited a Buddhist temple with my parents way up in the mountains. I was amazed at how abundant mantises were. They were so easy to find as well. Took about 5 minutes of Steve Irwin mode to find these.
