    Smells

Yes. That being said I've run a diffuser in a room with a mantis (accident) overnight before and he was still alive in the morning. The door was closed and everything. If you're gonna use candles or the like, do it in a room far from your mantises and close the door to their room.

    Death by light?

Was the light inside the enclosure???

anybody ever had The Florida bark mantis, also known as Gonatista grisea, grizzled mantis, or lichen mimic mantid?

I kept G. grisea once. The pair I had was from the lineage Mystymantis kept, though unfortunately my ooths never hatched. Only person I know of now with a line of them is PanterraPets. Good luck finding some though. They're quite elusive.

    Clever Mantis Names

Hmm I once named an ornery orchid male Bon Jovi.

At what point do I euthanize my mantis?

Sounds like the average lifespan for a male. He was likely dehydrated when he was drinking, but it was old age that got him. Mantises are short lived. Just gotta do our best to appreciate the while they're with us.

    New Mantis Owner

It would actually be i3! Mantises do not have larval instars which is what the L's are for. I would say your little guy is still a tad young to tell as the collars can change in future molts. It'll be easier to tell at i4-5. You could try getting a close up of Ripley's abdomen. Your pictures...

Where to get clear 32 oz deli cups with regular lids (not vented)?

There's also PanterraPets! I bought my first lids and containers from them. The lids are flexible, aren't noisy, and there's a reduced risk of harming your mantis. : ) While I've never used TheMantisPlace's deli cups, I've been always been satisfied with the equipment I've ordered from Rebecca...

Is a 12x12x18 enclosure too large for a 2-3inch long mantis?

Hmm yeah that is a little big for a mantis that size. Depending on the kind of food you give them and how much decor you have in the enclosure, they might not find it. However, there's a solution! Either handfeed your mantis or use a separate container for feeding. Or get a smaller enclosure...

    Salutations

Welcome! BugsinCyberspace and PanterraPets are great, reputable places to get started. If you look around the feedback section, I'm sure you can also find some small-time breeders to purchase from. Have you tried MantisMeet on Facebook? There's a very active community there! Last I have to add...

Ripped abdomen after molt. What should I do?

Looks to be a prolapse of sorts. If a male is eating and pooping, he might live for a bit. I kept a male alive like this. However, I would recommend euthanizing him.

Non native Liturgusa maya found again Florida. Communal?

Yeah they do like to be higher up in trees if I recall.

Non native Liturgusa maya found again Florida. Communal?

That could be be it. G. grisea is a very difficult mantis to find in general due to how well they camouflage. Thankfully, they're in the hobby. Rare yes, but not impossible to find.

    A larger Meal Worm

Mantises in general do not like the hard exoskeletons of prey items. If the exoskeleton is too hard, they often leave it instead of eating it. The softer insides are where all that fat is. That's something they don't need to be eating. :) Anytime though mate. There's plenty of other food options...

How do I keep these gnats away?

How's the gnats treating you? I use Mosquito Bits in my terrarium when I have gnats and let the soil dry out as well hehe. There are also predatory nematodes you can that target the larvae of fungus gnats. I find the best method of prevention an outbreak of gnats is a healthy population of...

What happens if I don't breed my female orchid mantis?

Correct! I unfortunately had this happen to me recently as I use prey items during breeding to keep the female occupied while the male is sneaking up on her. She decided to eat herself out of house and home... Unmated female mantises do not need as much food. Usually, I just watch the size of...

    A larger Meal Worm

Congratulations! Glad you've gotten some success in breeding them. Since this is a mantis forum though, maybe it would be beneficial to add that these are not healthy prey for them? Mealworms are far too fatty to be a healthy staple for mantises and can hurt them in the long run. Still, I hope...

Non native Liturgusa maya found again Florida. Communal?

While it's a shame we have another invasive species here in the U.S, it's also Florida lol. Still, they are beautiful and I'm looking forward to potentially seeing them more in the hobby here. If I may ask, any luck finding our native G. grisea?

    losing popularity

New formats mate. Forums in general are dying. People have migrated to places like Discord and Facebook for the mantis hobby. I do like to check in on the forum every so often just to enjoy the slower pace. If you want to see the other places, head over to the MantisHQ on Discord. Facebook has...
