    Calling after mating?

Can anyone confirm or deny if a female mantis will continue to call after she has mated?

What a calling female looks like

Thank you!  I was in pitch darkness so aiming the camera was a little difficult, but thank you!!

    Curious Posture

Just like Connor mentioned, it's nothing to worry about.  A lot of mantis species do this.  A common one, the Chinese mantis do this behavior all the way into adulthood.  It's a pretty neat behavior.

What a calling female looks like

Here are two pictures (Just taken 10:45 9/10/18) of female mantids calling.  Left: Tenodera sinensis, Chinese mantis  Right: Hierodula Majuscula, Giant Rainforest mantis There was a chain talking about how you can tell when your female mantis is ready to mate and I figured I'd show pictures of...

How do you prompt your mantis to crawl onto your hand?

I try to stay away from touching their butts because I know it freaks them out, like in their mind, something is trying to eat them.  I only do it when I need them to move quickly.  Usually if you put your hand in front of them at a higher angle and they are looking to move, they will climb on...

How will I know when a Chinese Female is calling/receptive to a Male?

With Chinese mantids I've noticed that they usually "call" or release pheromones to attract males during dusk/ through the night.  The abdomen usually drops a little and it looks like she's pumping something out. If you catch it, it's a very distinct look so you can't miss it, but you would be...

    Bit of an update!

I think it's all about preference.  Honestly, in the mind of a mantis, they're looking at each other because the other thinks that they can eat the other.  Nothing more or nothing less. lol.  I think after a while, a mantis realizes that there is something in the way so they just stare and watch...

    Bit of an update!

Liquid poop is usually never a good sign. Idk what you feed them, but I would feed the feeder insects healthy foods like greens, maybe some flowers from out back, water and honey just to clean them out. Mantids are quite resilient insects , but can be susceptible to parasites. On the other...

Male mantids: Disappointment or equally as fun as females?

Cool topic! Personally, I would always release the male mantids because I felt like they needed to "fulfill" their purpose of breeding and let me female call in her own male when it was time. (I'm talking about the Chinese mantis) The only other male I've had was an orchid male and we all know...

    Size of mantids?

So I've only kept Chinese, Orchids, and now Giant Rainforest mantids and orchid nymphs are quite small.  But you also have to remember what the mantis' specialty is.  Orchids are monsters at taking out flying insects and in my experience, they don't hesitate much taking on prey bigger than...
