What's the right thing to do?

A couple posts ago the idea of the Carolina Mantis being the only mantis native to the continent  was brought up and it got me thinking. I knew this information passively, but I never really thought about it.  I only thought about it more this year because for the first time I'm raising a...

    Grasshoppers/Locust

Does anyone in the states know where you can order grasshoppers or locust?  I thought I read that we can't get them here.  Is that a thing? I know many people would say go outside and catch them, but I don't have them near me, but they are a good source of food. Any help would be great, thanks!

    Using mantids for feeders

When I first started raising mantids, I would house them all together and probably 5 would remain after all the carnage, but I didn't know any better.  I would feel wrong doing that now.  I mean I get it, but it feels wrong to do. idk...lol

    Male Hierodula majuscula

Hey all, I'm looking for a male Hierodula majuscula for my very gravid female.  They seem to be quite rare, but if anyone knows of a place that I could possibly find one, that would be great!  Thank you!

    Occasional shivers

I've definitely seen this behavior many times in all my mantids.  I've just classified it as a mantis thing. lol  I'm curious as to why they do it.  It might be like a defense behavior.  Like if they notice something is near, but not a real cause for display, a quick shiver can catch you off...

    Don't get excited!...buuut

Your mantis is definitely going to molt soon.  When the wing buds start to get swollen, I noticed that they will still eat, at least day one of swollen wing buds.  When the wing buds raise ever so slightly and the more you raise mantids the easier it will be able to notice, that's when you know...

She's calling, but no one is picking up...

Hmm, I honestly never thought about it that way.  Maybe I will try to mate her and see what happens.

    Liza's Final Molt- Successful!!

Well done and congrats!  It's very rewarding to get any species of mantis to adulthood!  Have fun with feeding!

How often do male mantids eat as adults anyway?

In my experience, Chinese male mantids eat WAY less compared to when they were sub adults.  I think their focus shifts like you mentioned before to mating and then like Rick mentioned only eating as much as he needs.  Don't get me wrong, they are still pretty savage just like their female...

Chinese mantis - Not interested in food since molt from L5 to L6

I'm glad everything worked out!  Just for future reference, it's not uncommon for a mantis especially going on into the later stages to stop eating 4-6 days before a molt.  I always wait a solid 2 days before introducing food.  I know it's hard because of the size difference and you just want...

She's calling, but no one is picking up...

Not really looking for an answer or anything I just thought I'd share some thoughts.  I always feel bad when a female mantis "calls" but you know they will not be mated.  Not that they are yearning to mate and produce offspring, but it makes me a little sad that they cannot complete their...

    Is this true?

In general, honey is coined as natures natural healing remedy.  I believe that there are healing properties in honey and pollen that are beneficial to the mantis.  Like Rick said, there is no evidence that proves this, but I don't think it would hurt to introduce this to your mantis.

    Making orchid mantis pink

This question happens with every mantis species really with no real concrete answers.  I think ultimately it comes down to genetics, but the environment can have an impact.  To get those bright pink orchid mantids, I think that's all genetics, but personally when I owned the orchid mantis, I saw...

    Aggressive female

What's interesting is even for all the years I've handled mantids, they still give me a rush when anything happens too quick. I try to never give my mantids an option to nibble (or a live bite rather lol) on my hand.  One thing I thought about though is after the shock of a mantis striking and...

    Preventing a mismolt?

Have no fear. I think changing your enclosure was the best thing. When you raise mantis for a long time you'll notice that when the wing bugs swell, you know they're preparing for the most, but when the wing buds raise ever so slightly that means it's literally almost time and like Rick said...

    What's on the menu?

Hey everyone! I'm just curious what everyone feeds their mantids currently.  I love raising mantids during the summer because food is plentiful and I'm a big believer in catching bugs outside bugs because it makes them grow big, but I'm noticing that the busier I get, the harder it is for me to...

    Aggressive female

Where did you get the Locust?  Did you find them outside or purchase them?  I want to feed my mantids Locust or big grasshoppers, but they aren't around where I live, so I'm just curious.

    Sharp Mandibles

A lot of characteristics fascinate me about the mantis, but one thing that is a new discovery that impresses me are the mandibles of the mantis.  Watching a mantis eat a fly is one thing, but watching a mantis devour something with a hard exoskeleton is another.  The fact that they can break...

    Chinese egg case/Orchid mantids?

Hi all, Plain and simple, I'm looking for a couple Chinese mantis egg cases to release around my house and a couple orchid mantids to raise in the house.  If you have any of the two, can you reach out to me?  Thank you! Minomantis
