    Costa Rican Adventure

I recently returned from a vacation to Costa Rica. I did some searching for mantids while I was there and found some goodies. I spent a short time in Manuel Antonio, Uvita, and spent 3 days in Osa Peninsula at an eco lodge called El Remanso.  I must say, the amount of biodiversity and the ease...

    Mantis specific feeder question

The hardness of the exoskeleton is an important factor that often goes unmentioned.  Soft bodied prey that walks, like red runner roaches, are the perfect prey in my experience. The ones that prefer flying prey (Gongylus, Idolomantis, Hypenopus, other Empusidae) will readily grab red runners...

    Where's Cosbyart?

Glad to hear you're back and healthy! If you had been close to Allentown, PA you could've been cared for by a fellow mantis keeper ? I've seen many people die from Strep pneumonia, and there's a vaccine to help us learn to kill it. Take advantage!

How Many Ooths Does an Average Chinese Mantis Lay?

1-4 are usually big hatches, then they start getting sloppy by 5-7 and hatch rates drop off.

    P. Wahlberghii?

I've never experienced any fungal infections with them. The only problem I had was needing to mate the female multiple times to ensure fertility. They're good eaters and not very communal.

    Will nymphs eat ants?

Ants have much too hard of an exoskeleton for nymphs to eat them. Older nymphs and adults can eat ants for the most part, but the size difference needs to be big.

    First time breeding gongys

If you're keeping the females warm as they should, you can just leave the ooths where they were deposited for ~4 weeks.  The idea of an incubator never really sparked my interest. I don't think they actually make the hatch rates any better. Nature fluctuates and so should the terrarium.
