    Massive Cricket Death

I bought a total of 2 dozen adults and 3 dozen mediums. When the guy hands me the bags... it seems like there has to be.... an extra dozen in there. The deaths... around 16 deaths... 1/3 - 1/4 of the total population. Both adults and mediums.

    Massive Cricket Death

SOIL Okay, so I bought roughly 72 crickets on Friday (48 hours ago) and put them in a long tank... I'd say... 20 gallon tank with a screen lid. Before I put them in there, I churned the soil as to mix the old cricket poop in with the soil. I figured this was a good idea, since so much cricket...

Got this one from Katnapper. Lost the label she had on top of it. :P My bad, making new label but not sure what it is. I know it's not the Brunner's.

    Ootheca Incubation Chamber

If you hang out long enough, you'll see we have a group of KISS'ers. (Keep It Simple Stupid). It's like both sides of the political line, one believes in old, tried, and true ideas and the other side wishes to progress through trial and error. But, the questions we need to ask, and the ones...

    Flies (house/bluebottle) why so complicated?

:) thanks for the detailed information. I appreciate that. The ones I got from Spiderpharm are brown, which means they have pupated. I've put them in the fridge, but have taken out around 100 and put them into 4 cups. I'll simply follow your instructions starting at where you talk about the...

    Flies (house/bluebottle) why so complicated?

You could also kill your mantids and place them inside of cups like G.I. Joe dolls. You know, one in the breeding position, one in the attack position, one in the threat display position. This would be the easy method. No feeding, just... easy. :) lol (JOKING!! DON'T TAKE OFFENSE!!)

    Flies (house/bluebottle) why so complicated?

Depends on each person's needs and/or what they consider to be an entertaining side-dish of this hobby. I'm beginning to see it your way Rick, but that's me. At first I thought the kit would be easy/fun. Just getting the kit was a hassle. I'd do the bucket method if I didn't live in an...

    Mantid diarrhea? cha cha cha

This particular mantid is a Giant Shield... he/she just molted and only a day later... ate a cricket. I had another one molt a day later... 2 days and he/she still has not eaten. The liquid is brown, it's on the lid and on the side of the cup. I didn't see where it came from. I don't have...

    Mantid diarrhea? cha cha cha

Do mantids sometimes get diarrhea? I've found a dark brown liquid in the mantid cups on at least 2 of my species. I've never seen where it comes from though I can only imagine it's out of their butts :P It smells like heck too....

    Flies (house/bluebottle) why so complicated?

I understand that fruit flies go through a phase that's basically like this Egg Maggot Pupae Adult I also understand, that flies... house or bluebottle also go through that exact same phase. So why then, do we not harvest housefly cultures the way we harvest fruit fly cultures. That is...

    paper (real) or plastic plants

Started with real plants myself. At first, it was pretty cool when I only had 5 or 6 mantids. Then I got more mantids and had less time for plants. Eventually, I failed to put my plants near the window for sun, and didn't water them as I should have. Now, I use fake plants and have...

    Housefly maggot harvesting

Haha.. Phil you always have the right words to make me laugh/smile. I hope that kit arrives today :) I'd like to get started on it. My fruit fly cultures are loaded with maggots but not fruit flies. Too new and my mantids are pretty darn hungry. The bucket/kit... how does one extract the...

    Housefly maggot harvesting

I think breeding flies is fun, and can be a good way to save money. Oh, and you have flies available whenever you need them. Personally, I spent $20 on a house fly breeding kit. You could make your own kit if you have the time. I also found a DIY article on making a pretty crazy fly...
